Since Bitcoin has its own thread, I started this thread to talk about other crypto currencies and/or crypto currencies in general.
Do you hold/watch any crypto currencies besides BTC?

I am thinking about getting into ChinaCoin (CNC), it's not based on much really, just a hunch. And the fact that you can get about 2000 of them for 1 BTC now. What are your thoughts on some of the altcoins?

Update: not into CNC anymore, but mining YAC just for the fun of it. Yet Another Coin can be CPU mined, so if you want to get a taste of mining it might be a good start. If you need help to get started mining an altcoin, let me know and i'll try to explain as good as my knowledge allows.

I'm working on a litecoin rig now. While isn't not much more immediately profitable than bitcoin atm, I think it will probably grow a little more steadily, where bitcoin seems to be more boom and bust... although it will grow over time as well.

I'd be interested in other currencies also, but a lot of them are pretty volatile. I'll probably wait to see where the stronger ones emerge.

Well ultimately, way before we get to the year 2140 computers will be able to break the encytption the system uses. Not that it eally matters we will be on to the next fad way before then.

Not really all that different to trading property in Second Life, and that seems to have gone down the drain in recent years.

But those would be the risks: its popularity, its fad status, number of nodes on the network, level of encyption, other systems it will be competing with in the future

....and just simply how quickly it will take for everyone to just get bored of it. Which is the main reason I wont touch Facebook shares, how quickly did Myspace die.

So Bitcoins, in the shot term yeah, if it can double in one day. But long term no, value =0 as soon as the next big thing comes along

Still, I think we've only really seen the start of what P2P is capable of

Bird's altcoin tip of the day/week/month: Quark.

I've been buying up Quarks at a decent price. At the moment you can get them for around $0.10, but there are some events coming up that might drive the price up.
Right now Quark has the 5th highest marketcap of all cryptocoins.

I'm just questioning the sign on the picture. Who wrote that bunk for the computer age? Makes people too self-conscious the wrong way.:biker:

Not a clue what you are on about.

On a brighter note, I hope you guys bought some Quarks. Price is up to $0.26 now, reaching 4th highest marketcap of all cryptocoins.

BitCoin has now started a surge of people trying to make wannabe coins, not particularly bad but it's kind of a dumb idea as only a couple will survive

Yes, that's human nature. People try to clone a good idea and hope to get rich quick.
Only a couple altcoins will survive. That is why I mainly just trade in those coins hoping to make a few bucks and ultimately trade them back for bitcoin.

I was looking into this back when the bubble started, but I don't think I'll ever buy into it because it's not regulated and I would be afraid that I wouldn't be able to cash out. It also seems pretty easy to manipulate.

I guess there's always a chance that it will take off in the future but as is I would stay away... it seems to be crashing pretty hard right now.
