Not a big fan of anything gangsta myself. Think of it this way though, the gangster rap movement was as much anti-establishment as any other music movement.

Gangster rap is the opposite of original rap. The old stuff was about positivity and then all the dealers figured out it was an easy way to make money. I have even talked to hip hop fans and they agree, it is not supposed to be about money and coke. It is supposed to be about using your mind to bring change.

Some of the early rap was kind of prepackaged in the same way some early bubble gum pop rock was. At least as early as Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message' was released, which was pretty early on in rap, there have been rap songs exposing the problems of the urban streets.

2pac eloquently describes why gangster rap became increasingly hostile in this segment.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmFMLnp2bbc&feature=youtube_gdata_player"].

Like I said, I really don't like listening to gangsta rap, I don't listen to money rap either. I think it's stupid psychologically to listen to something where somebody is just telling you they could kill you or that they are way better than you.
If you listen to the videos I posted though, I wouldn't consider any of that in those categories. I do think that ganster stuff was necessary to get where we are now, because its tough to deny that many artists inspired their flow after groups like Wu-Tang.
That tupac video is excellent btw.

Hip hop is great for tripping if you know what to look for. Robert Glasper is a personal favorite. I feel a special connection to hip-hop music because it's what I heard on the radio. If you're my age or a bit older or younger (I'm turning 20 soon), then you probably share this special connection with the music. It has a certain color to it that you just can't get with any other music, just like rock or jazz or any other music.

The Gza was on one of Neil deGrasse Tyson youtube talks, and he was talking about how Rap goes through cycles just like most things in life. It goes from conscious rap about standing up for your rights and being part of the movement, to gangsta rap which is about the streets and survival, then it comes around to the party rap where its all about gettin' crunk and having a good time.

It goes around and around throughout the history of rap. He was also sayin how a lot of cats think its original when they start moving from one cycle into another, but really the story has already been told. It defiantly takes a lot integrity to be as raw and original as Wu-Tang was/is.

Like I was saying before though, good rap comes with heart and emotion. There are some rappers are like "I meditate through my 3rd eye, complex patterns, sacred geometry, speaking mantras, the 7th death was an anomaly." Something which is sacred, but when they speak it becomes too mental and it loses its meaning. Someone who really feels it usually have there own way to put things which is a little more natural. "Listen up don't miss it, the lights they all be glistening, my mind is open and feeling potent, so if you got a moment, just step in."

i don't identify with gangsta wrap too much, but i do enjoy listening to some select gangsta rappers - like Biggie Smalls and Bone Thugz

i used to listen to prefuse 73, sometimes when tripping.

and this is one of my all time favorite songs, reminds me of a particular acid trip with my brother. it's not really rap (maybe), but it has some of the same elements of "i'm better than you" in the lyrics, but i just like how it flows. they are clever lyrics.
