another theory is that underpaying employees makes it easier to keep prices down. (i actually heard someone say that even the waiters and waitresses dont want to get paid regular wages because that will kill their tips) i was raised by a single parent and she raised us 3 kids entirely on the tips she made so i am all for tipping when deserved. the only time i can remember not tipping was once when the waitress disappeared completely after giving us a sub par meal. and once when the waitress (who worked at the same place as my mom at the time...my mom said she was always grouchy and complaining) came over to ask what we wanted and we said we need a minute. she replied in a very rude voice. "i have other customers you know" my friend left her a penny and she gave it to me. i said it wasnt mine and she insisted it was. whenever my mom was working we always asked for one of her tables and she always treated us great and we always tipped her well but she was off that day.

there was a point to my rambling but this brought me down memory lane and i lost my train of thought.....
i know i was going to say that we all have eaten out and know what prices to expect for certain foods, and if a place is way overpriced i leave less of a tip. my theory and i would tell the wait staff if they ever questioned or commented on it is that if the owners can charge such high prices then they can afford to pay their staff more.

    Hello,

I did not read this thread.

To answer your question though... I usually tip around 10%, more if the service was exceptional, less if if was shit.

I do not believe that waiters deserve my money if they do not put an effort into their work. The fact that they financially depend upon tips should encourage them to be better at their very simple job.

If you are in the US, a 10% tip is considered insulting, so why did you pick that figure? You like to insult people?

Like I said before, in the US, 15-20% is expected.

So what happens if that 10% is left out by a customer as well?

My Dad was very stingy. He once took us out for dinner and only left a 10% tip. I was so embarrassed, I quietly left the other 5% because I wanted to return to that restaurant sometime and I didn't want them to hate me.

a 10% tip is more than fair, for someone who spent less than a minute of their time taking my order, bringing out my food, and refilling my water glass once. They do not deserve more than 10%, because they've barely done any work.

10% of a 40$ ticket is still $4. $4 for a minute's worth of work? That's like making $240 per hour. How is that unfair in any way?

Makes sense. I guess it is just custom though. And the knowing they are paid under wage (which they shouldn't be ideally).

i think 10% is a more reasonable expectation. then when you get 15 or 20, it's a bonus.

just because i go on a nice date with my wife, spend like 50 bucks...i'm supposed to give you 10 extra just for doing your job? sure, if you did the job well, but if you just went thrpugh the motions i don't see why that's worth 20%

actually, 10% is a little low. i think 16% is pretty good. twice the sales tax in my state, so easy to figure out quickly too

Fair or unfair, you are making a choice to insult the people who give you service. But I guess you don't care about that.

Well yes, if those people are insulted by me, then they can, in all honesty, go fuck themselves.

So, you're right. I do not care.

Actually... if I'm insulting them by leaving htem 10%, then maybe I should stop tipping at all? They'd be insulted one way or the other anyhow, so what's there to lose? I think I'll give this a shot.

Well, if you keep going back to the same places, some day someone is going to spit in your food, or worse.

i was just gonna say that, rubin.

would they rather get an "insulting" 10%....or nothing?

if you're offended at a 10% tip when you busted your ass.....ok. but if you're offended when you just did the minimum...maybe you shouldn't feel so entitled?

I am glad I don't have to worry about the intricate policies of tipping.
After reading this thread I don't understand how you people can't see what a joke that is.

Expecting people to just give you money for a simple job they are doing?
Go fucking complain to your boss and don't get insulted if people choose to pay the correct amount and not giving you beggars any money.

Really, people expect a tip of 10% or more?
    EXPECT???

    Silly.

I would not care about that personally, because I wouldn't be out to insult them. If they choose to be insulted I hope they tell it to me so I can ask my tip back :p
