I dislike both indie and most metal these days. I definately prefer to download before considering buying. Doom and certain black metal are the only subgenres I still listen to (where it comes to metal). There is a lot of uninspired doom and black these days too though so I rarely check new stuff. The best way to get me to spend money on a new band is to let them play in a cheap venue :cheers2:
...and pay into LonleyPlanet's corporate stronghold on the tourism industry which discriminates against solo musicians and discombobulates all sorts of waiters and their livelihood? How dare you?! What kind of hippie advice is this? Oh, the hypocrisy!
Yeah, for sure. Most new music is shit anyhow. Metal is dead. Rock n' roll is dead. Everything is dead. Let's kill all musicians. There's nothing left anyhow.
Some people are more into seeing and experiencing things than to learn all of the thousands of (unwritten) social rules of a place they visit for maybe a few weeks. By being respectful in general you can come a long way.
There's no reason you can't do both. And you only have to learn a handful of rules and probably the most important is the expectation for tipping. You've heard of "The Ugly American"?
I usually torrent download my music, but If I really like the artist, I'll buy the cd. I don't see how I'm hurting anyone by downloading music I couldn't afford to buy anyway. If I like it enough and have the money I will buy the album.
When I was a kid we didn't have the internet and I got most of my music by listening to the radio and hitting record when a song I liked came on. I also copied tapes from friends and vice versa, we had those double deck recorders. I would also buy tapes and albums if I had the money, but these days there's nothing out worth buying. I don't see downloading music being any different. If fact bands like Metallica got popular because of underground music swapping and even companies like Microsoft gained their huge grip on the computer industry because of piracy.
The bartender just tried to give part of my tip back. I said look, if I can't afford it I won't give it. You just got me drunk and fed me after a week from hell. Bartenders make easy loot but I for one support my local bartender. If I could actually keep track I would start adding it up. I bet I tip $5k a year easy
Some bartenders make way more than they deserve and some deserve way more. If your in a place with lots of rowdy drunks and fights are common then it isnt easy money.
