Well, waitstaff get paid about 2.14 euros an hour.

I wouldn't say that they "despise" foreigners. But in restaurants where I have worked waitstaff are keenly aware that by waiting on a foreigners, they are risking working for free. So, yes, many people avoid taking on a table of foreigners.

In my past experience, some foreigners tip, some don't. It sucks but I still treated them all the same. And sometimes we got to talking, and I learned a few things about them and their background, which is nice.

I know a lot of people think that waiting tables is easy, but it's actually quite hard. It's physically exhausting, timing is tough, and people often blame you for things that aren't your fault (although this happens in every job). It is painful when a customer becomes enraged that their food is not correct, and tip you less because of it (even though this might be the fault of the chef, who gets paid hourly anyhow). Also, waitstaff are often overburdened to the point that performing their job well is virtually impossible. I've worked in "real" jobs where the pay is better, and the work is less difficult.

I don't know about overseas, but in America people WANT THEIR FOOD RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT!! And God forbid they have to wait more than 10 minutes for a freshly prepared, made to order meal and elaborate mixed drinks. It's off with your head.

some americans are smart enough to realize that the waitress doesn't control the food though..

youFreeMe, if you've worked in other jobs that pay more for less difficult work...why didn't you stay there? just curious

I usually tip very well. If using debit I place 10% on the tab and leave at least 10% in cash. That way they are covered for taxation and yet they do not have to claim the other cash.

If it is a large group I tip 30% as the service is far more and when done right it is appreciated.

Nice to show people that they are appreciated.

I have only once not tipped and that was because not only was the meal a disaster and the service terrible but no effort was made to correct it. I spoke to the manager and stated why I was not tipping and would not recommend the establishment to anyone.

I did! I just don't like to hear people hate on waitstaff! Their job isn't an easy one.

Not hating on waitstaff by any means, but I don't think they have a particularly hard job.

See this is the problem here. They expect whats supposed to be a gift to come in at a set percentage now or might, and some places have threatened around here, to spit in your food next time they see you back.
Why not spit on your boss? He is the one intentionally ripping you off,,, we are Gifting to your standards of your own work and our ability to do so. Gifting it is, no set percentage required, just do a good job and take what extras above your wages come as a Gift.
Take your wages issues up with your boss, not your customers. We owe you nothing, we buy food there and pay your boss, he owes you for slinging it.

I ordered shoarma and tipped the driver 0%. He was still being nice and friendly to me. Plus I can be sure next time I order he will still be friendly and doesn't spit in my food. #gladpeopledonotexpecttipshere

I went to a Lebanese restaurant recently and tried to tip but the lady handed my money back with an amused yet slightly pissed off look on her face. I guess she hates American tipping culture too.

its an order at the counter kind of restaurant but the place is always packed and she works her ass off bringing people drink refills and bussing tables so I wanted to give her something for her troubles.

    mmm Sonic.

Yeah my ex tipped a guy 20 on a 10 dollar tab once. Because we went into Dennys with Starbucks and some douche made us dump them out. He wasn't even our waiter. Ok, I understand its not ok to bring other logos/drinks inside but seriously to stress it when the restaurant was empty anyway at the time… just overkill douchy-ness. Our actual waiter came up to us and apologized profusely, and treated us to free milkshakes so of course we tipped him well.

I went Mcdonalds with a Subway cup and asked for a refill. The girl behind the counter was cute so I figured I'd get better service. She looked at the cup gave me this look and a smile and filled it up. I would've tipped her it was allowed .
