I wasn't making this a wax vs. no wax thread.
Soaring only keeps bringing up wax.
I was more so talking about the other products they offer.

ok, i gotta reply to this thread even though im trying not to post in here.
i absolutly do not in any way advocate the use of wax or any product. dreads will form naturally on theyre own, and my own journey (over a year into it now) involves no maintenance or products except saop and and about 90% patience.
that being said, wax is not evil and knotty boy makes some very good products. i wish there were more companies out there using natural and ethical ingredients. i personally wouldnt use dreadheadhq stuff because of the chemicals they put in it, i dont like that sorta stuff on my body or in my hair. also, its not hard or expensive to make your own gel, tightener and even wax. use aloe for gel, salt water for tightening, and for wax: go to a health food store or something and buy some pure beeswax and some carrier oil like almond, avocado, jojoba or olive oil works fine too. you might like some essential oil for scent too and vitamin e is good. in a double boiler, melt some beeswax then add oil and vitamin e. you can also include shea butter or cocoa butter, add it now. take it off the heat and stir or beat with an electric mixer untill it cools to warm and begins to solidify, then add essential oil and mix it in well. put the wax in a jar and let it harden completely. there ya go, you can make it any scent you want and its much cheeper than buying it :) i didnt give measurements because i tend to play it by ear when im making cosmetics, but you can test it when its on the stove by dipping a spoon in it and letting it cool. if its too oily and soft, add more wax. you want it to be nice and hard.

i waxed my first set and my reasons for cutting had nothing to do with how i had formed and maintained them. i still have the dreads since i felt a deep attatchment to them. i took some pics for the sake of this thread:
please excuse the dirty gardening hands ;)

i wish you could feel how soft they are and how nice they smell. they are clean right through and not sticky in the slightest.
i have seen some people (one close friend in particular) ruin their hair with wax though, it is very possible. i do feel that knotty boy and other places that reccomend wax dont give accurate information on how to use it, one example is a kontty boy video i saw on youtube where the stylist soaked some poor guys hair with a whole jar of wax and then melted in it with a blowdryer.
i used only a very small amount and while i dont feel like it helped all that much and certainly didnt speed the locking, it conditioned my hair very effectivly and did make it look a bit more presentable.
so, for some people wax can be a good choice. it IS their choice after all, who cares what they put in their hair? i just think people could be a bit better informed. but the crazed wax hate/conspiracy theory/omfg u used wax ur hair will dye it will nevr cum out ur fukd! and comdemnation of people who have a differnt view of things and have had different expiriences from you (soaring eagle, i basically mean you. chill da fuck out.) is a little over the top, and not at all what i would expect is in keeping with the hippieness of this place. lets all relax and let each have their own way of doing things.

It's unfortunate that everyone has such strong opinions on the subject of products. Being that we as a community of dreadheads are just as diverse as a grouping of body color, we have extremely different needs... hair texture, hair history, hair savvy or not, scalp and skin types, amount of time until we need to look "every hair in place", if ever, and so on.

Product or no product, we will dread. Perfect dreads naturally, and messed up dreads with products, it will all happen. The most important thing to notice here is that we need and experience differently, and therefore ONE product of the bunch might be a lifesaver, while it destroys another person's locks. Products are great, when used in the right way on the right head by the right person. Natural is undoubtedly great. There isn't much to disagree on, considering that we all wont always experience it the same anyway.

I hardly found the post on products to be "shoving it down my throat" but definitely an opinion I can take into consideration given his experiences... and yet, an experience I can only speculate I might mirror myself, should I decide to use those products.........

Simply a waste of money. Might make you feel better, but dread products are nothing more than a combination of hype + gunky shit that smells nice. Doesn't really matter in the end, if you keep em clean and natty then who cares how you got them, but it is a total waste of cash.
