    Are you kidding?

It is actually *too easy* to be prescribed in the United States. No funding? Not a problem .. there are plenty of programs that will make sure people have access to their "meds". Some schools actually get more money for their "mentally ill" students. Psychiatry is so out of control that they're now prescribing *infants*. Last I knew, psychiatry is a 300 billion dollar per year industry (three times the amount of what the Catholic Church brings in).

    5 x 40 = 200 x 4 = 800

Definitely could not afford rent in West Virginia on a single minimum wage full time job.

<<Lower income and the truly mentally ill often fall through the cracks because there really isn't a lot
    of funding for mental health.>>

Which does translate in rural white trash terms into no counseling, no real eval's or what people would call mental health, just a revolving door of a medication refill line. The defunded mental health scene is not "get by on phony "counseling", that costs much more than a $2 script which is also sales of a product for at least triple cost. (I think xanax costs about .07????? cents to make?)

That's a good example of "socialised" medicine right there.
If socialized medicine can help a country and people that's one thing maybe. Here, right now, this vrsion of it is a disaster that threatens our health quality, economic stability and rights. It's bad for the country and it's bad forvall of us, not just the idiots or freeloaders who sign up.
It's a chump package, which uses the feckless for operations of vast wealth and politics that have nothing to do with them and "deals with them" at a profit. Just like chump issues are floated out to keep the retarded sheeple busy bleating about stupid things while finance, business and things that really are issues in handling being a super power are handled by people with some stake or vesture.

Right. And for those who can't understand what OddApple is saying, the "lack of funding" correlates to the LACK OF GENUINE CARE AND TREATMENT, since the primary "treatment" is diagnosing (labeling) and prescribing (the medical model).

Soteria is an example of genuine care and treatment for people in crisis, distress and need. Of course, it was *sabotaged* and the motivation is plain to see.

"Soteria houses are often seen as gentler alternatives to a psychiatric hospital system perceived as authoritarian, hostile or violent and based on routine use of psychiatric (particularly antipsychotic) drugs. Soteria houses are sometimes used as "early intervention" or "crisis resolution" services."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soteria_%28psychiatric_treatment%29

The Soteria project was admired by many professionals around the world who aspired to create mental health services based on a social, as opposed to a medical, model. It was also heavily criticized as irresponsible or ineffective. The US Soteria Project closed as a clinical program in 1983 due to lack of financial support, although it became the subject of research evaluation with competing claims and analysis. Second generation US successors to the original Soteria house called Crossing Place is still active, although more focused on medication management.

China also had the Barefoot Doctors program, but when it worked beyond "for show" they cancelled it because they were on the same "herd them to the cities" agenda we are and nobody really wanted rural chinese healthy or living longer.

lol you proved my point.. those numbers show you could survive.. with a good 300$ to spare, and if you do multiple bedrooms and have more people working than it's even cheaper.. never mind tax write-offs for kids and such.. Third world my ass, you people are delusional. Nothing but greedy americans, even your first world standards are not enough

    800 - 523 = 277

Do you realize that paying $523 per month in rent with a take-home income of $800 means you're paying more than 50% of your income? And after paying rent, you're left with only $277 to account for ALL expenses and necessities. What about transportation cost, getting to and from work? What about food? You'd be living on ramen and eggs.

Man, a pound of butter is between $4 and $5. Know what one pound of butter is? Less than one tablespoon of butter per day in your diet.

Do you know that malnutrition is the biggest cause of ill-health and eventual disability? Can't get that $800 per month if you're too sick & incapacitated to work.

Ever been dehydrated? Doesn't sound so threatening, does it? It is actually *extremely* dangerous.

I live in New England. I can't drink the tap water because it's loaded with chemical treatment. I'm hyper-sensitive and I get sick pretty easily. I have to BUY spring water (IF health is a priority for me). When I shop for the best prices, I'm still paying $20 per month for my WATER. In my house, water IS medicine. That's how I treat it (look at it). That water is the most VITAL intake of my daily diet and without it ... I'll die. But I won't die easily. It will be a slow, sick death.

Out of $277, deduct $25 just for water and a pound of butter. $252 left.

No movies at the theater (what, $10 per ticket?). No Aeropostale jeans, no nike sneakers (unless you've got the time to hunt down bargains at Salvation Army or the Good Will). No iPod, no iPhone. Shit, probably couldn't even afford Boost mobile pre-pay. But that's okay because the government offers a FREE cell phone with FREE minutes every month for low-income people. How sweet!

Oh yeah, sign up for triple play! TV, phone and internet for a bangin' deal .. $100 per month (for a limited time). After the 12 or 24 month contract, your prices will increase (at the cost of your diet, most likely).

American is a POVERTY country (hello, Family Dollar!). A welfare country. A FREE country (get it for FREE!).

The part in bold made me laugh the most, why do you feel entitled to these luxuries? living by yourself is why you're this low on money, sharing living costs is what gets you the extra money to afford miscellaneous expenses.

Want some advice? buy a water filter for $16, eliminate your monthly water expense entirely. This will take the fluoride out of the tap-water and make it safe to drink

And another point.. how are you even communicating with me online in your 3rd world country? huh?

I never said anything about feeling "entitled" to anything and I don't think those things are "luxuries". People NEED to live (such as, going to the movies). Some people like to go to museums (and there are admission fees although some libraries do offer free passes to some places, so there are ways to LIVE FREE). And clothing? Do you know that, psychologically speaking, wearing quality clothes can make or break a person .. as young as elementary school age?

I used to work for Brooks Brothers. Familiar with them? I could not afford to buy a Brooks Brothers suit but I guarantee the people who wear them feel a whole lot better than those who wear suits from .. more "affordable" manufacturers. And will the job a person gets (or doesn't get) be influenced by their attire? You bet.

Filtered water isn't as healthy as spring water. Spring water is the best (better than distilled, purified, filtered, etc). And I do have a filter (use filtered water to boil pasta).

I don't watch TV (wouldn't watch if you paid me) and I don't need home phone. My internet is affordable :)

I'm really failing to see your point though..

The majority of the world is starving on the streets while we sit in our homes babbling about entertainment..

That's a narrow, selective view. Read the entire thread. I've been in destitute poverty (no home, no money, no food). I know what it's like, and not because I might've read something about it or studied in some community college. It's life experience in a country that isn't as "first world" as some people might like to believe. I once lived in a gutted out trailer (had NO INSIDES, not even a floor). lmao

But anyway, according to statistics .. 1 billion people are in hunger / starvation. That's not the majority but it is a HUGE number. And I've been one of those people.

(I ain't never been to Africa.)

Just because you've been poor or even homeless doesn't mean the country you live in is a 3rd world country.

The fall of good paying jobs or the rise of too many people needing one have created wole counties that are ghettos. It wasn't always like that. We ate potato soup once or twice a month, but we had a solid nice house. The shack poor and homeless were few. You were poor for sure if you got food stamps and people feared ever needing them.
But, there are still first class places it's just now whole cities are one step from "mother india", let alone towns.

I'm glad you mentioned that. It makes me want to tell a story...

I've got a bit of wanderer-gypsy in my bones and blood (if it HAS to be called something, whatever). I like to go out for a walk. My style is to climb into the woods and I *love* to walk the train tracks.

Last summer, I walked the tracks from town to town.. quite a bit. One day, I see this music CD on the ground (I find a lot of CD's actually). This one was a Kitchens of India music CD. So I stop to pick it up and I look forward about 5 feet off to the side, and I see a mattress there. I walk over to it and then I see a big pile of bones.

Oh SHIT. I had the most horrifying mental image! Kitchen of *eating a wild animal along the train tracks, then laying down to take a nap*

    lol

Seriously though, it made me realize that even though those pieces all came together to tell a living story - that may or may not be the actual reality - what I do know is that SOMEBODY was sleeping along the train tracks right next to a pile of old bones. The person didn't necessarily eat the animal (heebie geebies) but I know the animal didn't drag that mattress there! A human did that.

I've found plenty of camps in the wooded areas all around here, actually. Some people do a fine job with their little constructions. I wish 'em Peace and blessed bellies.

Congrats and I'll continue to pick cans & bottles to earn a couple dollars per day (then return to my half million dollar home, lmao)

This 1800's house was like a dilapidated haunted house when I moved in. Landlord sold it to somebody who owns a construction company. Total transformation = now the property's value is SCHWING!

But I've always had the most unusual luck.
