Today, many centuries ago, Jesus died for your sins

Easter is not about Jesus. Its about the Easter bunny, chocolate eggs, all pagan rituals.

You mean: it is not about Jesus for you. Easter has been about Jesus for centuries.

Probably the early missionaries in northern Europe encountered Pagan springtime festivals which had to do with re birth - the re birth of nature in spring. So they decided to combine it with their own re birth story of Jesus. That would have made sense to an agricultural culture.

You are right, and not only in northern Europe of course.

I know what Jason was getting at but he was describing it wrong. Perhaps he would like it not to be about Jesus, but fact is that it is about Jesus and has been for longer than Jason's own existence :p

For Christians it's about Jesus. For others just a spring holiday and fun for the kids.
Although I'm not too keen on Christianity, I wouldn't want to deny people their freedom to celebrate as they see fit. Pagans too for that matter.
    Obviously, I'm in a generous mood tonight.:2thumbsup:

I think pagans aren't denied much these days. The dark ages for them seem to be over :cheers2:

My wife was pagan and her celebrations frequent and coinciding with the phases of the moon and solar zodiac. Nothing whatever to do with historical remembrance.

I'm not sure this would apply to modern pagans, but the Roman and Greek type pagans had myths which weren't fixed as historical events in their minds.
Christianity pins it down to a definite figure, Jesus, said to be an actual historical person.
So for the Christians it certainly became an historical remembrance, and remains so.

A lot of pagans seem to want to connect with nature and the cycles of nature, and not with any particular historical Incarnation. I don't claim any wide knowledge of modern paganism, but Wiccans for instance have their god and goddess, but they're not seen as historical figures, more as something intrinsic in nature. Or maybe some depth of the human psyche.

They also have their own spring festivals of the Equinox and Beltane.

I would rather watch Jesus Christ Superstar than The passion of the Christ by the way!

It is unfortunate that the axiomatic instruction of the jesus figure becomes through vain application a cult of personality and hollow liturgy. An uncommon but timely narrative is we exist in the sabbath which is given us to do with as we will and there is not one thing we do that is not done but for the body or at the bequest of our thirsting heart. Quite apart from marking the calendar we commune or find our reverence as often as we hunger or thirst.

This is part of what I mean by solar zodiac that begins with janus, january.

The Passion of the Christ is really just a piece of antisemitic propaganda. I know because I pass Mel Gibson's house on my kangaroo ride to work and sometimes talk to him. He really doesn't like Jews.
