I think that there would be fewer overweight people if being naked was accepted outright.

Asheville Rep. Tim Moffitt wrote a bill last year that would send women to prison for going topless in public. The bill would have expanded North Carolina's indecent exposure law's definition of "private parts" to explicitly include the nipple. Exposure determined to be for sexual gratification would be a felony, punishable by six months in prison.

Last February, the bill was sent back to a committee. At the time, Moffitt said he was confident the measure would come up for a vote, but it never did.

  5. I think I would go around in pajamas if I could. Not sure if I would wear underwear or not.

That is exactly where these awful laws should be killed, in committee. Standing idly by while they pass one house, then the other, then get signed by the governor or president and only THEN rounding up support to defeat them is too little, too late.

It's much cheaper, easier, and more effective to stomp out these bad ideas before they garner enough support to see the light of day. But that takes effort and paying attention which have not been the hallmarks of the naturists that I've encountered, sadly.

 Last I heard about this, from a local newspaper, the bill was expected to sail through both houses without significant opposition from either party (not that it matters how the minority Democrats vote). I wonder if it just got temporarily stalled due to a backlog.

In this state, it's always been hard to get legislators to go on record as being opposed to any law enforcing conservative Christian morality. We still have quite a few outdated laws on the books ranging from a ban on unmarried couples sharing hotel rooms to a ban on using profanity on a telephone call between consenting adults. In many cases, district attorneys have been instructed by Raleigh not to enforce specific obsolete social laws. This information gets passed along to local law enforcement people, who stops making arrests in situations where they know there will be no prosecution.

As your quoted article pointed out, the city of Asheville still wants to push this bill, so there is still a good chance it will pass in the next legislative session. I don't pick up on any serious concern from the Outer Banks region, the only other place where it's likely to be an issue. There is a culture war going on within the Asheville metro area. Most of the social liberals are originally from somewhere else, or the children of out of state transplants. Surrounding towns, except for Black Mountain, are hardcore conservative territory. I'm sure you noticed in the article that city leaders were lumping the downtown hippies into the same category as vagrants.

Anyway, maybe we can get back now to the theoretical question in the OP.

If public nudity was legal................I'd be naked in the streets. I begrudge getting dressed to go to the shops......in the warmer weather of course!

I wonder if public breast feeding is the reason that so many states allow toplessness.

i remember when ny made going topless legal. to this day i have still only seen one woman in public topless in ny. but about 3 years after they announced the law, a bunch of women were arrested for going topless. one of the rules in the state was that you couldnt go topless if it was to advertise for a business. and these girls were holding up signs for a strip joint. somehow i get that but somehow whats the difference? i would guess its because if your getting paid for it....i dont know, im sure they had a reason. probably because it would be everywhere if it was allowed in advertisement.

funny you mention about the kids being nude.
if i understand correctly in japan you can show all the nudity you want but you cant show pubic hair. so i guess their logic is kids are okay to be nude and if you look like a kid you can be nude.

If public nudity was legal I would never wear clothes again, save for maybe a coat and boots when it gets too cold.

If a ban on public nudity was uplifted, I doubt too many people would take advantage because I think society is so culturally fossilized into believing that nudity is embarrassing, or simply immoral. You'd have to change the cultural attitude as well.

    I'd participate though

I don't think I would out to eat or anything. But out in my yard I would and I wouldn't worry about blinds or anything.

I would definitely go naked in Wallmart if it was legal and others are doing it.
