    Standing up with Pride
    May 3, 2004

As we enter the season of celebrating Pride in the LGBT community, Americans should embrace the diversity that makes our nation strong and recommit ourselves to ensuring that all Americans receive equal rights.
I am proud to have fought for equal rights for gay Americans, but unfortunately, so much still remains to be done. I am committed to using the power of the White House to advance equal rights for all Americans, including gay Americans. Together, we can help America keep her promise of liberty and justice for all.
The Bush administration repeatedly uses gay rights as a political tool to divide the nation. That's just wrong. We don't need a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. We need civil unions with full and equal rights. We don't need opposition to hate crime legislation. We need to reject hate and embrace tolerance. And we don't need a president who plays politics with gay adoption. We need a president who works every day to protect and support all children and families.

The LGBT community contributes to our nation in so many ways, in every corner of this country. Hard-working citizens, these Americans are our family members, our co-workers and our neighbors -- they are, I am proud to say, my friends. Just like all Americans, they care for one another and they contribute to our communities, to our economy, to our national security and to our future.

And in return, they ask only for equal treatment. Gay Americans deserve the right to make medical decisions for one another in times of crisis, the right to inherit a house purchased together and equal access to health insurance, Social Security and retirement benefits.Together, we can provide this simple justice.

We have come so far over the past decade, but we have further still to go. I voted against DOMA, but too few others joined me. I voted for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and hate crimes legislation, but again, too few others stood with me. And of course, we have to end the discriminatory policy of "don't ask, don't tell." The bottom line is this: We can ensure equal rights for all, but only if we work together.

As we salute Pride across the country, I remember the words of Congressman Barney Frank: "Why do we talk about gay pride? The answer is that what we are proud of is our individual and collective willingness to beat back a terrible prejudice." I am proud of what we have accomplished, but I believe we can and must do better. I want to lead an America where the inscription "Equal Justice Under the Law" has both meaning and value for all Americans, not just some Americans.

But I need your help to make that happen. Join with me and let's work to make an America where all Americans are celebrated with pride and treated with dignity and fairness.

I had the best time at the RI Pride events this weekened. Yesterday I spent all day with the Youth Pride people getting stuff reading for the event...met a ton of cool kids and had a cookout/party at one of their houses. Then today was the whole festival & parade ordeal - I've never seen so many gay people, ever, except maybe in Provincetown (and then it's different). The whole city of Providence was very receptive to the event, having elected openly gay mayor David Cicilline it's clearly an overall accepting city. The music was great, and there was a ton of stuff to do.

Then tonight I went with a bunch of the kids to a club for the first time...I'm 17 so I had to make something up to get in. It was freakin awesome. For some reason I thought I'd never be into that scene but it was a great time. It's a gay (men and women) club called Pulse and I loved everthing about it. The music and the lights were amazing. I didn't really meet anyone...but I really didn't feel like it, I kinda have a lot on my plate right now. A fun 48 hours.

my advice: get to a pride celebration near you :)

Yeah, it hardly even matters if he calls it "second-class citizen partnership"! As long as Bush is out of there - Kerry will do more for the GLBT community than Bush will ever think about, no matter what names Kerry uses.

I just voted for Kerry about an hour ago. I wish I could be more enthusiastic about him, but my real priority is to vote for the candidate who has the best chance of getting Bush out of the White House. I don't expect Kerry to make everything wonderful, but I do expect Bush to continue to make things much worse for LGBT people and for most of the rest of the world.

The Republicans will push the anti-fag line to keep themselves in office, I doubt it's even relevant what if anything Bush thinks.

Yeah, Bush himself actually has a track record of being respectful, polite, and even "hip" in regards to openly gay individuals and couples in the workplace. I read some story by a log cabin Republican about the kindness/openness Bush showed he and his partner, an out couple, at a recent dinner. Not phony either, it was a personal interaction.

The problem is the fucking Bible Belt culture running rampant throughout this country...THAT'S the anti-fag line, where it comes from and is speaking to. It's a huge culture war.

    It's wicked early still.

pride is...interesting. good for keeping a finger on the pulse of the mainstream, filled with budweiser ads and politicians who don't care.

    but it's fun.

Pride parades in May are, for the most part GLBT youth celebrations, with the main GLBT celebrations in June. Since you live in Southern California, a lot of communities hold their own, small-scale celebrations in advance of the big parades next month in Los Angleles and San Diego.

So don't fret. Pride Season is just getting started.
