Just had to share this (don't post here much but I'm still tickled by this event) - I was at a Tesco store today to buy a box of matches. The security guard asked if I had shoes for my children (I've been barefoot for years and my children often go without footwear) - I said no and asked politely if there was a problem. He stated that Tesco cannot be held responsible for my children's health and safety and as they are young he could not trust that they or even I could ensure that they are careful....I had to stick both my children (aged 8 & 10) in a shopping trolley to walk 10yards from the door to the tabacco counter, buy matches and return. It was so much fun for my 10yr old she wants to go barefoot to Tesco again just so she can ride in the trolley! I have had so few incidents where barefeet are a problem and I can't remember the last time - but heck what is happening to the world!
they were'nt worried bout the kids.just worried bout insurance claims if the kids hurt their feet on glass or something.customers and staff drop an break glass jars sometimes.
I doubt that he was speaking for the legal department; had he been, he likely would have said nothing. There is a legal principle, which is probably the same in the US and UK since the US essentially inherited the British legal system, that indicates if he gets specific in qualifying what one must wear for Tesco to be responsible for the health and safety of patrons, then they actually accept much more responsibility for the care of those individuals than by saying nothing. If he had said nothing about health and safety and just said one cannot enter without shoes because it is their "rule", then their legal obligation for protection would not be changed. Next time ask him if he is speaking for the legal department or just shooting off his mouth--because he had better check with the legal department before issuing special instructions regarding health and safety.
*lol* this is really ridiculous! ... or sad? Kind of real life comedy .. it's so good that your kids didn't feel "guilty" and made a joke from it. Seems your education makes them become self-confident and postive thinking. Congrats!
Tesco have a real problem with this. They are the only store I've ever been given hassle (in more than one store). I must confess I've stopped going bf in there which is kind of giving in I guess but can't be doing with the hassle. I'd like to boycot them but my gf loves them. It does seem to be their big stores that have issues, the smaller Tesco Metro etc don't seem to have a problem (probably because they aren't full of security staff). I did take my step-daughter in their store bf a few years ago, but that was when she was small enough to ride in the trolley anyway, so nothing was said. My step-daughter is going bf more and more (hopefully following my example), though I don't actively encourage her into places where she may meet confrontation, in case it puts her off
H&S gone a bit mad but at least you have found a new game for your children which is fun and free! I am off to Morrisons to see what fun I can have
TBH I don't go to Tesco much, but I understand that they have some kind of confused anti-litigation policy. I just really dispare with the world sometimes - infact it was only the other day that my brother had to sign a consent form from his son's Cub Scout group that would allow him to eat food cooked over a camp fire! I can only imagine what will result in a world without learning via risk-taking.....oh well.........:banghead:
I've been bf in the Barton tesco without any comments, but i don't ever recall seeing any security staff there, they must be in a back room watching the cctv.
Yep I think they are. Notice how there's a security camera above every check-out. That gives them time to watch you whilst you're just waiting there. Every time I've been given grief they've just descended on me, like they've been tipped off
Why still shop there? I am a horrible customer, the slightest thing pisses me off about a company, and I will boycott them and spread the word, doing everything I can to make sure people I know no longer give them their business. It is a bit pointless but if everyone did, big business would be held accountable for their shit. It's not like there's not plenty of alternatives in any industry/business.
Last Friday I was approached by a manager that I should be wearing footwear because of health and safety in case I cut my foot on broken glass or something. He said as I was finishing off my shopping, just continue but next time have something to wear. I didn't argue with him as I knew how Tesco is. Two days later, shopped at Sainsbury's and Wilkinsons without any hustle. Never had trouble at these stores.
I had a Tesco run-in about a month ago in Bristol. Got told that I could not shop without shoes. The guy was really rude, usually I argue, but I knew it would had been pointless so I just passed him my shopping and walked away. I just hope he had fun replacing all those groceries Sx
It works just as if you're at somebody elses home. Their store, their rules. No biggie. Just be pragmatic about it when they insist on them.
I just put something on before I enter an establishment. Some of you seem to just love inciting confrontation about your stupid fetish. Have some respect for someone elses establishment for fucksake. Plenty of places to go barefoot without causing a hassle.
