thats great to hear about all these cats that respond correctly to their names and stuff. Ive never had mine do that but then again I've never tried ....:H
Its not mean at all. I love my cats and they love me I just don't give them formal names. I call them "kitty" when I want them to come and they come running. They are always happy to see me and they all have their own way of showing affection. Its beautiful really.
As distasteful it is to me to think of not naming pet cats, I do have to say that my cats seem to respond more to tone of voice than to their names, if they respond at all. I think they may know their names, but its hard to say since I call them by many variations of their names. Once of my friends even calls my eldest cat Bobo, which is definitely not her name, but she sometimes responds to it anyhow. Naming my cats makes me happy, but they probably don't care all that much, since in their eyes they are in charge anyhow. My gerbils, however, are both named "Gerbil". They're pretty much feral anyhow.
'the naming of cats is a difficult matter it isnt just one of your holiday games you may think at first im as mad as a hatter when i tell you a cat must have three different names' i dont remember the rest of the poem (its from t.s. elliots book o practical cats!) but i think its definately true. the poem states that each cat must have one everyday name, one fancy name, and one name that the cat himself knows and will never confess. i usually name my cats something nice and fancy and then end up calling them something else. im sure they think of themselves by another name completely though. thats a cat for ya! i have one named prometheus, and i call him nuggett, one named baccus that i call led zeppelin, or zep, and one named bonjour, who also gets called jaque or honchybaconchy. meow
dude, how can you not name your pussy, thay learn who thay are. our cats come when thay are called. not all the time but thay knowe there name. and when thay are in truble, or when thay are loved, or when it's diner time. thay know alot more than we think thay do. mabey your cats don't like you, mabey to them you are some nameless thing that walks around making noies.(sound) i know that last part sounds mean but if you heard me say it, it would not be as mean as it sounds in writting. it's all in the tone of voice. love and blessings
And maybe you are all a bunch of high-strung freaks who get bent out of shape over nothing. :H There are four cats here, and only two of them have names (which they don't even bother responding to.) But when we talk to them or call them, they know usually which one of them we're talking to just by eye contact or tone of voice, not by what we call them. People give themselves too much credit.... Cats don't have names in the wild, and they seem to do just fine. Do you honestly think you are doing your cat some grand favor by giving them some second-rate name that you wouldn't even give a human child? ("fluffy" and "snowball" come to mind... ) Our kitties love us...all you have to do is go to the gallery http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59979 to see how much they luv sprout. (BTW, that cat is "named" buffy, but I don't think she cares.)
Thanks so much to all the people who responded positively. Some of these girls in here have been ripping me a new one over this like I'm some sort of animal abuser. So much anger in some of you. peace
when i was trying to name my current cat i went through about 5 or 6 names before i finally settled down w. one (mr kitty) i dont think he really understands the concept, an everyone just calls him kitty anyway..
I'm not going to have a go at you for not naming your kittens because that is a bit stupid so I'll just say that I think people name kittens for reference or uniqueness for the, I think sometimes it can reflect on the owner, Not saying anything against you, I mean man not naming your kittens is your own decision. I think it's unique that you don't name them. Keep On Stroking.
