The majority in a democracy can do that indeed :p

edit: but it does of course not mean that the minority that voted for seperation chickened out in any way.

Phew.. well that's that for now.

I still have mixed feelings. I'm glad the Scots didn't vote yes as it is now possible we'll be able to get another Labour government elected next year. (not that I have any faith in Labour to be very good - they would be the lesser of two evils though).
A bit miffed because I think the Scots were more or less bullied into this. As one disgruntled Yes supporter said, the referendum was the British establishment including the media vs. The Scottish National Party. I would have liked to see a shake up of the system.

I suspect that a lot of the promises made by the No campaign will now get substantially watered down, or even abandoned. Time will tell.
As far as I can see though the only real change we'd get from further layers of government in UK regions would be more cost to the taxpayer and very little if any benefit, because all the big issues will still be dealt with by Westminster and it's political elite.

Alex Salmond comes out of this well I think, even though he lost and has now resigned. He seems to be a politician of a higher calibre than most of those south of the border.

Yes it does, bunch of pussies the lot of them, well 53% of them or whatever the figure was.

But seriously, think it was kind of dumb having this vote so soon after the commonwealth games when touchy feely ideas of unity and togetherness still prevail

Rather like you Aussies being a bunch of pussies for lapping up Wills and Kate and forgetting about your own independence? Hehe

Probably the main reason we dont.want independance, if its not Will and Kate we'd have to find Aussie replacements. Then someone like Shane Warne would be defacto king of Horsetralia

Thank you for posting this. I had been wondering for so long what and if they would change the name of the United Kingdom, because I know that stands for "United Kingdom of England and Scotland." I am from the United States, I can drive with a 20 mile radius and find white, African-American, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, Arab, Persian, Native American, you name it... it's funny how you argue over the littlest things.

And whoever said in a post that Scotland took over England... where on EARTH did you get that from?

No one has taken over England since 1066.

He was saying that the people who became the scots took scotland from people who became english. I mean, he's full of shit, so.... it's pretty irrelevant.

If you're going to post in serious discussions, why don't you make a new username, to use in a more honest way? You know, something that won't make us all think of you as the type of forum trash who comes and asks a bunch of disingenuous questions to masturbate to, every time we see your posts.

You think I am masturbating to forum posts? You have some strange things in your brain.

And I'm pretty sure the people who became the Scots came from Ireland and took it from the Picts, not from the people who became the English who were Germanic.

They are all a mix of all of those things by now. So it has little use basing things on it who has the most right to govern what in these days. 'Modern' Scots are modern scots for centuries, although it is interesting to look at their origins and which original ethnicities they're mainly comprised of, this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

Actually, you're forgetting that Wales and Northern Ireland are also part of the UK. Drive 20 miles from my place and you'd be in rural Wales, in fact in an area where Welsh nationalism has a long history.

Also the racial mix in this country now is very wide. Even in places like Scotland and Wales - we even have our own Welsh jihadists in Iraq.

Well I did not know that. Only place I've ever been to outside of the United States is the Bahamas, but that was just a hotel/casino full of tourists.

I have to hand it to the British. You can read a history book and sure every place on Earth has their history, but it's pretty clear that the British do, indeed, kick the most ass.

    Ethnically, I am 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Scottish, 1/4 Italian, 1/8 English, 1/8 Polish.

I think it's funny watching film clips of World War II, where it shows all the British troops drinking tea in their tanks and the BBC broadcasters narrating dogfights like it's a comedy show.

Up against all those angry Nazi's. How the hell did they win?

Do y'all still hate Hitler over there? I guess that hits home a lot more to you than it does to me, not that I was alive back then anyway.

I think it's funny that white supremacists idolize Hitler. They should hate him. Before World War II, Europe owned the whole world. After it, they didn't. Hitler single-handedly ended European domination of the globe.

There's no particular reason you would know, just like a lot of Brits know very little about US history. I've been to several other European countries - but they're relatively close by and not too expensive to travel to. Never been to the US although I'd like to visit one day.

I too am of mixed genetic background - Irish/French/English and a bit of Welsh. So I'm not really your typical Brit.

As for WWII, I agree those old newsreels look very quaint. Some of the commentaries were very probably made that way deliberately for propaganda purposes.
How did Britain win? Because we fought on the same side as Stalin and Roosevelt. Without the USSR and the US, Britain would certainly have been defeated.

Only if you go back centuries. Mine goes back to my grandmother.

For centuries the English and the French fought a series of wars. And there was always suspicion of the 'auld alliance' between France and Scotland.

It can be argued that about half of France should belong to England :p

So thought Henry V. and many others.

But if the French should decide to hand half over to the UK I'd like it to be the southern half. They keep Paris, we get the Riviera.
