Well don't forget that the Norman invasion of 1066 was just one part of the Norman-Frankish expansion of the time. I am proud of my 1/8th Germanic heritage. My English ancestors came to Massachusetts in 1630. Look around you. What was invented by Germanic people? Or more accurately, what was NOT invented by Germanic people?
Thing is Asmo, was Normandy ever English? The Angevins, from whom I'm assuming this claim arises, were more French by a long way than they were English. They fought hard to retain control of their vassals and the lands they controlled in France, but ultimately to no avail. :bigcry:
Yes the Brits are Germanic. Descended from Angles and Saxons. Of course the native Britons were not, but I think the majority of the genetics there is Germanic, but I could be wrong. But yes I was including them. I would say they came up with the most. Industry, computers, radar, tanks, etc, etc. (and the technology is another reason they were on the winning side of World War II, not just their allies. They invented computers to crack the German codes, radar, and advanced weaponry) And why not enslave millions of people so we can have some sugar in our tea?
Yeah I really like that period in time I think if Richard Lionheart is considered english so was Normandy at the time!
Normandy was part of the Angevin Empire, a name that derives from the title Count of Anjou, held by Richard's father Henry II when he ascended the English throne. Richard was king of England but actually spend very little time here, living in France before and after his crusade. He came here for about 6 months, got married, raised some money to pay for his expedition and never set foot here again.
Richard has become the subject of a great deal of romanticism, and he has been fictionalized by writers such as Sir Walter Scott, umpteen movies etc. He certainly was a fascinating and complex character - one who seems to epitomize the age in which he lived more than any other single person I can think of. I think it would be fair to say he was principally a soldier and an adventurer. He did nothing really for the people at all.
A lot of Brits don't like being categorized as Germanic, despite their ancient ancestry. Maybe because of the hostility between Germany and Britain in the 20th c. Anyway, whatever this country may have produced in the past, both the positive innovations, and the sordid things like slavery, the country is really a spent force, a former empire in decline.
Yea there's not much more they can do. I think the future of the world is in Latin America and India, and maybe Africa too.
Not sure about that, but the Barons 'revolt' against John certainly had some long lasting implications.
The beginning of the end for the king's absolute power. Richard II (or the people behind him) helped it a bit further if I recall right.
Yes - although some of the things done by Henry II are generally considered to have laid down the basis of English law, Magna Carter was an important step. Of course, it would take centuries before the power of the monarch was effectually ended, and they were transformed into the living museum exhibits we have today.
I think Brazil would be a better place. If I were to go to Africa, it would probably be Nigeria, South Africa, or Kenya.
Asmodean, or Roorshack or whatever nic you are using today.. Wow you really don't know when to shut up on a topic you dont know the 1st thing about. Here's a tip, why don't you join a forum specialising in wooden shoes, windmills and such shite. And "ad hominen" on some of that.. Because all you're doing on this thread is embarrassing yourself... as usual. ________________ Moving on, glad to see that lunatic Salmond got beat. The only ones who voted for him in any numbers were in Glasgow(and suburbs) and Dundee. Except there was MASS FRAUD in those two areas. The former is a hotbed of Irish Catholics, Polish temp workers, foreign students and Asian Muslims. All of which love coming to Britain, but HATE Britain. Hometime for the lot of em methinks! And Dundee is a similar thing to Glasgow, just more foreign airheaded students. Sadly the Scots who benefit MOST from the Union, ie those working abroad, werent allowed to vote. Yet the Pakistani Al Qaeda student with IRA sympathies gets TEN votes in the rigged elections in Glasgow and Dundee. Dont wanna be in Britain? Go back to Ball.ygobogtr.ottin and Islamastan.
Thanks for making yourself sound so credible And maybe you should look up the definition of ad hominem again. I explained why I find what you said nonsense. Albeit short and in a question sentence. Then you react with a lame response about windmills and accusing me of also being Roorshack? And then I'm the one responding in a personal attack... Really? Like I said before: it is hard to believe you yourself think you make a valid argument
Yawn yawn yawn. If ever I have insomnia, I'll remember to read some of your replies.. <snores> PS while I'm at it, here's some new English vocabulary for you. You are a :toilet:
Apparently some people get pissed off when confronted with their own nonsense. I guess that's understandable
