I believe that the key to being at peace (aka. happy you could say) is non-attachment, disidentification with the ego and the mind. Being able to let go of thoughts, expectations and fictional mind stories which are all that thoughts are brings peace.

I read Eckhart Tolle A New Earth (best selling author of the power of now) and these are the things he speaks of and it not only makes sense but it resonates at a deeper level and I find it to be true.

I feel that beneath the constant stormy waters of the mind lies an infinitely deep ocean of stillness presense and peace.

BUT then I ask myself (a thought...I know) if I could really be happy without somebody to love and beautiful surroundings of nature. I think its the simplest things in life, like the autumn leaves changing color, or a furry kitty cat purring on your lap that offer us the best chance of authentic happiness.

Everything that is material will ultimately fade, change or vanish one day so the more unattached we are to these things the best chance we have of being happy.

both paths converge. yours is seen as the harder one, by those to lazy in mind, to look beyond themselves and the familiar, to see what is ever so much the easier one.

Yes its so easy to get so lost in thoughts and emotions (I know because it happens to me every day) so much that we loose sight of the beauty that surrounds us. We forget that the little things in life and the things within us already are all we need to be truly happy.

So easy to get caught up chasing after people, places things and ideas that we think will fulfill us but only lead to more wanting, more desiring, more suffering ultimately.

Happiness is the right mix of Serotonin, Catecholamines, GABA and Endorphins.

I think I've said it before, but I'll say it again, if you're one of the people who believes material things don't result in happiness, you can give your material things to someone who does, and everyone will be happy, bada bing bada boom, win, win.

I tell ya, my truck is a material thing and it makes me so happy! It took me several years to save several thousand dollars to buy the truck with cash, and I got a really good deal on a really low mile 17 year old truck that already had a canopy, bedliner, and was super clean. Those things made me happy and they still make me happy. It's so simple and so functional. I love it!

I bought a lumber rack for it which I use to hall lumber, but mostly I store my surfboards on it, and I keep my wetsuit and other gear in the back. So I'm always ready for those days when I'm coming back from town and the surf is good.

It's just a 2wd truck but that's fine with me, less stuff to break, better gas mileage ec cetera and it's still beefy enough and high enough off the ground that I can drive on some really bad roads to get to the surf. I ruined a hyundai driving on those roads. I nearly split it in two-lol

I love my house too. It was a really good deal. It's in the country, and it's ten minutes from a really good surf spot. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars fixing it up, and I've spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours on my garden.

I really love my material things. They bring me a lot of happiness, but to each their own.

Cool beans man. This beer I'm drinking is material but I realize it won't ultimately bring me happiness, its a temporary escape.

I'm no prophet. I don't even know how to put into practice what I understand to be true but I'll tell you the times I'm on that path I feel better. Times like these I feel like crap.

Ss the night progresses I'm going to feel batter and better but as the day progresses worse and worse.

How will you feel when your to old to drive pickle or when the truck breaks down?

You see that's the difference between us. Were both materialists but only one of us sees through the fiction of it even if he can't stop himself from clinging to it. One of us at least is not in denial.

I'm a mess and I admit it but I've learned a lot over the recent years and slowly making changes but damn I'll tell you change is fucking hard. Change is really fucking hard

Ok I'm done hijacking this thread so I'm bouncing but thank you moonglow you sound like a caring person in a very apathetic world. I tell myself one day at a time. Now I gotta bounce before this gets off topic.

Man I feel ya, but I got to tell you I'm about as happy as I've ever been.

I learned I'm just an ambitious, goal oriented, disciplined person, and I'm happiest when I'm ambitious, goal oriented and disciplined.

I know it's not very hippeish. It's not very go with the flow, but that's me.

Goals give me hope for the future. Ambition gives me something to do every day to make those goals a reality, and the same with discipline, it gives me choices every day that I cane choose to make those goals a reality. Discipline is just a bunch of seamingly small choices you make every day that add up, and the future arrives before you know it. Do you want to buy that 12 pack and feel good tonight or do you want to save that money and feel good about your future???? The choice is yours, feel good tonight or feel good about your future. It's your choice.

I tell ya my truck is paid for. My student loans are paid off, and my house is about halfway there, I have money in the bank in case an opportunity comes along that I can't resist and I tell ya it feels really great to have accomplished all those things.

I haven't drank alcohol for 15 years. I don't use tobaccoo anymore. I almost always 100% used a condom when I had sex (hey I'm human after all) I'm single and I'm really glad I've made the choices I've made.

I see dudes like my cousin who had children, got divorced, their ex moved states away, they never get to see their children and half their paycheck goes to child support even though he rarely gets to see his children. He has to do something he doesn't like to pay his child support and to support his new wife and child-he didn't learn the first time, and man he's misereable.

People say experience is the best teacher, and I say other people's experiences are even better teachers.

I won't even have sex with someone I don't think would be a good mother or a good partner. I used to be like I'm attracted to this person. They're attracted to me, game on, but I've just come to the conclusion the few fleeting moments of pleasure of sex aren't worth the lifetime of consequences to me, but especially a child. But hey everyone can make their own choices.

It's not a state of being, more like something you manifest from within yourself
