I am new and don't see my posts! Hopefully, they will be on here.....I am very interested in joining you as a like minded 54 year old. Please keep me posted!
Who wants to try this in Corvalis Oregon in March or April, maybe late spring? If we get three or four of us we can even rent a place to get started.
Hi there, if you guys get some place in Oregon in the Eugene area get in touch with me. We ( wife and me) are ready to move to Oregon right after we sold the house here in WV. We just have to sell the house. We buy an RV for the move and to live in it for a while. I'm thinking of buying a garage kit from carter lumber or so and turn it into a house to live in it , in combination with the RV. We are looking for a long time to find a cheap house, but all we find are Trailers in 55+ Trailer parks with 400 to 500 Bucks Lot Rent. I've nothing against a Trailer but I don't won't to spent 500 Bucks on Rent and have someone telling me what kind of color my house has to be. On top off that, I'll just turn fifthy in a view days, so I would not be welcome in these parks.
I would like to find a few people to rent a house in Oregon and split the costs. I lived in an RV trailer for 3 years and sort of liked it. So, I would not mind if folks like you live out of an RV on the property, just as long as you help out. There might be restrictions in bigger towns, but also ways around it. Smaller towns would be easier. There are lots of rv parks along the Oregon coast, but the monthly rent is just like the mobile home parks.
Why in a town? Get back to nature... I've an odd feeling we are all going to need to do this rather soon. "How close can you live to the earth?" keeps coming up in meditation and dreams.
Hi and Happy New Year Tyrson, You are right about a place in the country. You are right about being close to the earth. And Krishnamurti did teach me to "see things clearly" without the abstracting lenses of government and church. My first choice would be the country; however, the place has to have power and water to qualify for a mortgage. And I haven't been able to accomplish that on my own. I can do it in the midwest, but not the west. So, that brings me back to the idea of a commune where several friends could pool resources somehow and get a place to retire in. Hippies my age ain't gettin' no younger.
Dude, I lost nine people this last six months. Five were very close friends. It's a strange feeling to go day to day and not speak with the same friends who I used to see and speak with. That's one of the reasons I landed on the idea of getting older folks together in a communal home.
Greetings....I am very interested in starting a commune...I have a house and vehicle that is paid for and an annuity that has 5 years to mature...My home is probably worth 100,000. and my vehicle about 20,000....I am a 61 year old widow that has played the corporate game and sick of it...and my kids are just waiting for me to die...so, they can cash out..I think I still have a couple of years left in me...I also have about $1,000.00 a month income from my deceased husband...I hate the weather here and want to go some place where it does not rain as much...I was thinking Hawaii but it might be a little expensive..Any suggestions?
Hi TexasHippyWoman, I have friends who went to Hawaii who told me it is very expensive there. Many of use are not as well off as you are. I used to have money and lost most of it in divorce court. After that, I was hit with costs after a big operation. I am 60 YO and mostly depend on my Social Security income. I have good credit and can buy a new house (lost old one in divorce); however, I am limited to buying something with a price that they would approve me for. So, I was thinking of getting a few of us together to rent or buy something. I looked at a couple of earthships were we could grow our own big garden and can fruits, jams, and veggies. I like to bake my own european style breads. Most importantly, I would like to find a group of people who want a tranquil life where everyone care about the others and is respectfull to them. What I don't want in a home environment is political and religious extremism, or violence. People always seem to argue over political opinions. So, I would not want gunslingers living there, or people who would want me to accept Jesus as my personal banker. Drugs and booze are another issue for me. I am too old for that scene. If guys are drunk all the time, then there will be fights and other unpleasantness. Drunks tend to bully people. So moderate drinking would be ok with me; but, extreme drinking would not sit well. So, let me know what you think. We might come up with a few good people our age who want a happy home climate
Hi Stormountainman, Yes, that is what I was thinking of Hawaii also...but I thought if I got enough people together, it might work...I would like to get off the grid and the earthship homes are really inviting to me...I suppose there are some drawbacks to them as with everything....I am an iridologist and a master herbalist...I eat organic and no gluten, amongst other things...so, the growing of our own food is essential....I do not smoke or drink, and I am with you on the political and drinking part of it...and I would not think that anyone that is wanting to get off the grid would give two hoots about politics as long as it does not affect us...I am a spiritual person, not religious ...when I do go to worship, I go to the Buddhist temple...and Buddhist here are very loving, caring people and do not judge anyone for their religious beliefs, or beliefs in general..The whole reason of growing and cooking our own food is to keep us from getting sick, I also make my own colloidal silver and other things...Peace is a must....I meditate and exercise yoga and I cannot live with violence...I guess that will be the key to get like minded people that are not going to be a problem...I am looking for less problems...not more...lol...Let me know what you think..
I used to read Thik Naht Han and Krishnamurti. I still like Buddhism. It is a way of mastering one's own mind, not really a religion. It is about becoming free of religion. I still like Sidartha by Herman Hess. I had to read it twice when I went to college. Anyway going back to the off grid living. I have some cool ideas about solar power too. If we get two or three others, it may work.
Yes, I have read alot of Thik Naht Han and Krishnamurti...Buddhism is a philosophy, not really a religion....I like the philosophy and if more people could live their lives out of this philosophy...well, it would be a different world for sure..I have a couple that have a house that is paid for that have expressed interest also...Do you have anyone that is serious about this? I am very interested to hear your ideas on solar power...I sent you a private message but I am not real sure exactly how this forum works...just getting into it.. Where do you think the best geographical spot would be for this little venture?.Are you the only one on here that is serious about all this? I look forward to getting our ideas together...
Hi TexasHippyWoman, There are several on here who have expressed interest in the past. I'm sure once we get things off the ground we'll get folks on board. My solar idea is basic: if we get "off grid" then we don't need the power company. So, I have a system that is used on semi trucks and motorhomes. It is done by using solar power at the 12 volt DC level and getting all appliances from rv and truck dealers so they work on 12 volt. The system works. RVs have good heat in the winter, and ac in the summer. They have everything that works on 12 volt these days, even washers and driers. For the stuff that does not work, you can always use an inverter. I did try to respond to your private message. I don't know if it went through. I 'll try again when I'm done here. As for the location. I had said that properties in Arizona and Oregon are cheaper; however, in Arizona water might have to be trucked in and will get expensive. There is cheap land in the Kingman and Ashfork area, There is cheap land in northern Nevada too. I don't want to be a dictator, so would like a vote by everyone joining us. If we done buy a place, we can rent one for a while and see how things work out. If we have four or five people contributing $300 per month, we could rent a nice place. In northern Michigan the weather is cold in winter; but, summer is just beatiful and prices are very nice. How do you feel about living in a snowy place?
I am definitely not a snowy place kind of woman..lol..I have lived in the Phillippines and love tropical weather...I am not sure where the perfect place to get off the grid would be...But if it is out there, we can find it...Let me do a little research and I will get back with you...ttyl
Well, of course in Hawaii it's eternal spring time. I lived there from 68 until 75 and one thing I learned is that you almost have to BE in a location to ascertain the renting/ buying situations. I got very lucky and rented 17 acres with a house for 50 bucks a month!!!! That was on the Kailua side (big island)--the dry side. You just never know. I did look up some real estate once (from here in Oregon) and saw one place that was 125 thousand for a couple of acres with a small building and macadamia trees for income. Again--you just never know. You can sleep outdoors there ALL year long, if necessary--or not. But of course, Hawaii is a BIG commitment for folks that have never been there, to just pick up and go. Not feasable--maybe. Oregon is a great place, but it does rain. The last few years have been beautiful from April to October. I like the 12 volt idea. Easier to get clear off the grid. I'm still watching-------------Joel
