the worst for me in the stores was the peg board sets for carded items. One fucking item gets discontinued or packaging changes and you end up having to shuffle around 8-12 feet of shit!!! or whenever they put too much weight on one section peg board so one morning you open the store and find a four foot section of cough and cold crap all over the floor and the peg board cracked in half.
ah but i love labyrinths too. the more convoluted the better. a big and diverse hardware store is better then a disnyland. but again the one thing i do say negative, is the corporatizing of retailing. i refuse to have anything to do with wall mart. (no i don't want to be helped, i came here to drool on all the wonderful inspiring goodies. and maybe buy something if i remember what it is. which being 'helped' isn't going to help me do. you'll know what i'm looking for when i find it myself and bring it to the check out counter. if i want something in one of the locked display cases, THEN i'll ask to be helped.)
most places i'd swear, do them deliberately poorly. with hardware though, to be fair, there's aren't enough dimensions in time and space to do them well.
i have much more experience with lowe's. lowe's showed up near my hometown when i was still pretty young; home depot didn't move in until after i had moved out. since then, i've had two jobs where we had accounts with lowe's, and none with home depot. i've had very little problem finding what i needed at lowe's. that said, home depot seems to have a slightly better selection. if i can't find what i need at lowe's, it's because they don't have it. then i go to home depot, and there it is right where it should be. i suppose it's more likely to happen then than in july.
I've walked back in to Home Depot when I realized they only charged me for two bags of water softener salt when I had three in my basket. Seriously.
i prefer lowes because when they have clearance items its not just a measly 10% off its more usual to find 70% off one time i bought a bunch of brand new $400 grass bagging systems for lawntractors on clearance for $80 each and resold them all to people who happily paid $200 thinking it was an awesome deal
i like all hardware stores. i like retail of all kinds better to be mom and pop. i don't really have a preference among corporate retailers, other then some i prefer to avoid because of the politics they support. hardware stores are hardware stores though, and to me, they're all better then disnyland.
They might be fun for a hobbyist, but a person gets more critical when you have to rely on them to supply stuff for a trade, ( like home building and remodeling) because they've pushed out the mom and pop stores
Small contractors don't have the buying power to go to a wholesaler, even if there was one around. You would be surprised the contractors that shop at home creepo everyday.
Ha, my dad said he took a 1000 watt dimmer in to Home depot and asked one of the help " Do you have one of these? who replied "sure... what is it?" lol Dope, I used to live in the South west...I really miss the dulce twitter of Mexican women.
when I worked for the vendor, I was told specifically not to help customers. but its kinds difficult not helping them when they are asking about the things we're assembling on display .. But I would sometimes say we dont work here, they would give this confusing look like why are you talking things out the boxes, building things in the middle the isle if you dont work here.
What drives me up the wall first is the constant badgering under the guise of offering assistance. Lately I'm being asked no less than 5 times if I need any help. They don't REALLY care if I do or not. In fact, any of them I take up on it usually have no idea what I'm talking about and have to refer me to others. Why? Because when Home Depot employees offer help, it's just to remind you they are watching in case you plan to shoplift. That's it. That's the only REAL reason they do it. When you walk in the door at Home Depot, you are automatically assumed to be a thief by their whole business model. Lowe's is only slightly better. Their creepy loss prevention dorks just follow you around the store. On a happier note, everyone at Home Depot seems to want to help me when I have long hair. But with short hair, they leave me alone most of the time. So if I WAS going to shoplift such an easy store, I'd cut my hair, wear a reflective vest, boots and loose pants with inside pockets. It would be almost like shoplifting with Harry Potter's cloak!!!
Your are right about the store detectives (loss prevention) but I'm pretty sure the other employees are under constant pressure from management to ask people if they need help. Otherwise I guess it's because they are bored It's like the Mcdonalds people always asking if you want fries with that...DID I SAY I WANTED FRIES? IF I WANT FRIES I WILL ASK FOR THEM!
i don't think i've ever been asked if i want fries with that. probably because i've never been to mcdonalds and not ordered fries.
