CASE 25. KYOZAN'S SERMON FROM THE THIRD SEAT

In a dream Kyozan went to Maitreya's Pure Land and sat in the third seat. A monk there beat the gavel and said, "Today the one in the third seat will give a sermon." Kyozan arose, hit the gavel and said,"The truth of Mahayana is beyond any verbal expression! Listen, listen!"

    Mumon's Comments:
You tell me, did Kyozan preach, or did he not? If he opens his mouth, he is lost. If he seals his mouth, he is lost, too. Whether he opens or seals his mouth, Kyozan is 108 thousand miles away from truth.

    In the bright daylight,
And yet in a dream he talks a dream.
Indeed a possessed word, a possessed word,
He is deceiving the entire crowd.

If you don't want to follow Buddhism that is no problem. If I choose to follow Buddhism what is the problem. There is no conflict unless you just want to get a rise out of it.Please explain your central reservations against Buddhism and I will try and get back to you and explain my position.

Trouble is spiritual knowledge is based on experience.
    Words just can't cut it.
    Don't teach.
    Don't preach.
    Don't listen.
    Don't think.
Be a lotus, roots in the cold, wet mud but still open to the light and to the warmth.

Words are part of experience,a large part of how we experience our reality. In spiritual knowledge yes we can transcend language, but hard to hold on to all the time.

And experience is encoded in the gene, therfor we can learn from those who go before, that is why the sage speaks. Surely if you have no firm vocabulary you shouldn't speak on the issue you are unsure of except to inquire for additional information. There are no idle thoughts and we teach and learn on this basis without ceasing. It is buddha I want to speak to.

Ok. I can't really speak for Buddha. I can speak in favor of some of his teachings though.

In my experience and investigation, I feel that buddha was basically trying to demonstrate the 'cause and effect' nature of everything. That is of course my view of what I have read about his teachings, filtered through my view on existence.

I think the purpose of meditation is ultimately to reveal how everything arises from a cause, and becomes/is a cause.

I believe that all words that have been said by a lot of Buddhists and buddha try to point to that cause and effect nature, and to the fact that all things are interrelated.

I'd like to add that I thought there was going to be a physical fight between Thedope and Buddha (I'm not disappointed though). I think you would have the upper hand in that regard Thedope.
