in my many years of working with homeless people i would always say 80 per cent of the time that the ones with dogs are really good to them. but this dose not surprise me at all. its a cruel world full of fucked up cruel people. but i admire you for challenging them. even more so when you where on your own. your right people don't care about the homeless at all. and i think its why people do ignore them. and hence why you saw nobody take a blind bit of notice. but my god be careful what he had a knfie?

Thanks :) You know, I am not trying to come off as some kind of brave hero. I was afraid. Very afraid. That's why it took me so long to confront the dude. But I cannot stand to see/hear abuse of any kind. So I finally said my piece, and he was far from happy about it. If he had kept on abusing the little dog - I was afraid it would die. And I did not want that on my conscience. Interesting that he has suddenly vanished from his favorite street corner? The dude knows he fucked up big time. Thanks for all your kind words :)

I think that tikoo is identifying with the dog owner and projecting qualities onto him that he likely doesn't posess.

While one could imagine a scenario where the dog owner is being unfairly persecuted, I think it's unlikely for the following reasons

    1. PD has over 1800 posts on this site, and while I haven't read all of them, there's nothing that he's posted that makes me think that he exaggerates or willfully misrepresents claims. If someone can find a post of his that is evidence to the contrary, I'll be happy to consider that.

    2. PD states in this quote

I can't imagine any scenario in which a person thinks that an animal is at risk of being killed that does not constitute animal abuse, unless that person is willfully exagerating or misleading.

    3. PD claims to have been homeless once and to also have volunteered in a shelter. Unless he is falesly claiming this, it seems unlikely that his perceptions are the product of discrimination against the homeless

    4. This guy made violent threats to PD and pounded on his cab window. The store has a record of him verbally abusing a cashier, has a picture of him, and has banned him from the store. All of this indicates someone who has a problem with violent and abusive behavior, which is highly consitent with someone who would abuse an animal.

So unless there's a good reason to think that PD is misleading us, I don't think that anyone can reasonably conclude that the dog owner wasn't abusing his dog based on the information that's available.

Good on ya PD for confronting this guy, I just hope that you can get evidence next time and get the dog to safety

I’d like to know what the dog did to the homeless guy to deserve that type of punishment?

The little dog was getting lots of attention (and helping the homeless dude) to get spare change, until another homeless dude with a much bigger dog suddenly showed up. The little dog started barking at the much bigger dog, and that's when the homeless dude decided to "discipline" the dog by holding its mouth shut with both hands, and holding the dog down on the cold wet sidewalk with his left knee (while shouting "shut up" at the top of his lungs). This lasted for five minutes (at least) until I told him what he was doing was not cool. That's when he decided to shift his rage onto me. Luckily, a cab I'd called came to my rescue. I still don't know what happened to the little dog. But I'm doing my best to find out :)

It's always a bit scary when you have to confront someone in a situation like that. But I think you did the right thing.

Im sorry but OP is over reacting

I don't call holding a dogs mouth shut "torture"

What was this dog doing to the man? You left that out...

little tiny dog was probably killing the man.....

I hope that tiny dog is still alive....:(

Let us know what you find out, pacific, please, if anything more.

So many homeless dogs and cats out there and on their own...in the cold, freezing, starving, etc.....
It always makes me sad thinking about it.

I thought after initially reading the OP that it could go either way, maybe it was torture or maybe it was discipline....but pacificdude has clarified that this went on for longer than 5 minutes and the man had a lot of weight on the dog. This is abuse. Clamping his mouth shut and lightly pressing your knee on the dog for a few seconds is discipline. Doing it for 5 minutes and shouting the whole time is clearly the behavior of an abusive person.

Ok I read what I missed...and OP should mind his own business and not force his hippie mentally on others because it's "not cool"

    that's just my two cents.

That could be it, but I don't think he supports animal abuse.

Right on for confronting that a**hole, sounds like a real jerk...but I imagine like others have mentioned a lot of people may not have said anything because they where afraid of him getting violent but sadly I imagine it was also a lot of indifference a lot of people really do seem to be caught up in their own little bubble of ignorant bliss. I know if I saw someone treating a dog or any animal like that I'd have a hard time holding back...

I don't think that tikoo supports animal abuse either, but he seems to be ignoring signs that the dog really was abused
