If you call it race baiting you feel righteous in shutting down free speech? I'm not using any abusive language, I'm just asking people to look at the situation with any measure of sobriety. If being honest hurts, that's the most important time to be honest.

and let's be honest. The only time any comments hurt is when there's truth in there. Else it's easy to dismiss the critic as a fool.

There is no real line that I can see in Freedom of Speech, with the exception that if you say something that is a lie and you get your ass sued for it, you lose your ass royal.

I'm with newbie on this one. He's arguing for true equality, while Karen it seems like you're arguing for an apologist stance of tipping the scales to an opposite imbalance to make up for historical imbalance. Judge me by the content of my character, not my ancestors. We can't ignore historical context of animosity between racism, and flipping the tables of racism onto the previous oppressor does nothing but further flames that very same animosity. There's nothing kick ass about it other than it's standing up to the man, just in the wrong way.

My logic on this one may be flawed, but free speech is an unalienable/universal right/law, so you would have to ask the one who extends the right/law--the universe/God.

I wish I could. Karen is one of the academics here that I respect an awful lot. You have no idea how much I wish I had her tolerance and wisdom.
Because I envy her tolerance so much I'll even refrain from telling you to go out in the middle of the street and play go fuck yourself. Because in doing so I would clearly show a lack of tolerance. So there. I'll hold off on telling you that. :)

Okay, I might have overstated my case just a little bit. In general, whenever somebody says anything that sounds even the slightest bit positive about white racist comments or the supremacist position commonly associated with that kind of talk, I'm going to take the other side. Maybe even to the point of fucking with them a little.

All this should have been laid to rest a long time ago. I don't have much patience left for it.

Free speech is that I can say anything I want--and you can't.

I think Keller says it best.

"Threats to the president, blowing up buildings, hijacking planes and staring at the children."

If only that bridge was longer... My favorite part of the song lol.

I thought that this thread would discuss the draw Prophet Muhammad contest in Garland Texas.

Seems sponsor Pam Geller has come under media fire for hosting a provocative event.

Two guys showed up to shoot guns at participants but were dispatched by an armed security guard,

Geert Wilders was a featured speaker

I have been reading about the 1961 Freedom Riders on Wilkpedia.

Certainly this incited violence. a type of a cathartic violence.

Yet nobody will condem the Congress of Racial Equality for sponsoring the event.

There is no freedom of speech other than what those in power allow in any particular society. Ranges from zero to almost 100 %. I'm with P. Henry on that one. Except for the currant radicalism that takes life , limb and freedom.

In today's world where unscrupulosity is abound, I'd be hard pressed to try to come up with a catch-all definition of free speech. Since words cost something to someone, albeit only time, we can essentially rule out finances having anything to do with free speech.

Through somewhat of a logical deduction, I'd say free speech (circa 1980) was best described as one's ability to freely express their feelings (with pretty close to zero trepidation) in the public or private domain without fear of oppression or chastity. Since we all know certain things like presidential death threats and discussing free school meals with school boards are frowned upon, we can change that to 'with trepidation'.

YMMV, of course, when subjects like this come across the forums.

The line is drawn when free speech is denied. Freedom of speech doesn't mean one is free from the consequences of their own words. I've lost jobs by pissing people off with words, so I know there's just about zero free speech in a workplace these days. So when I see the boss's friend/nephew/girlfriend stealing pencils, I don't say shit about it.

I have a huge problem with trying to silence racists. All it does is drive them underground, which is how the KKK formed. I would rather have them free to spew their filth loud and proud. It makes them so much easier to spot, and avoid. I'm able to actually apply this in Atlanta. If I hear any racial crap in a restaurant there, I don't go back. Same with stores and street vendors. If their racist speech was suppressed, I would financially supporting racists I'd rather avoid.

The other problem with suppressing bigots, racists, losers and politicians is that when you drive it underground, it doesn't go away. It builds as does the false sense of security. When the Black Panthers were allowed to openly state that the only way to win was to kill white people and be prepared to kill white babies, during a park festival, everyone knew who to avoid. Especially when they pointed out black guys with white girlfriends and called then traitors and Uncle Toms. Truly disgusting language and speech.

I think people need to get over this childish whining about people's words. Sure, I don't like to hear anyone say n####r. But knowing the person who was thinking it strongly enough to spout it out, has more value than trying to pretend that they don't exist. I say let people say what they want and suffer the wrath of society if need be.

Does anyone remember the song that the Sleeze Sisters sang in the movie Times Square? ".............. your daughter is one" (sound of TV falling from apartment rooftop)

Say its Wintertime. Someone asks if they can build a Snowman on my lawn.

    I say yes.

They build a giant phallus instead.

So I say, hey I'm Offended take it away, take it down.

They say: You are violating our freedom of speech!

    Am I?

When you infringe on the freedom of one's speech, you are infringing on your own.

We are not responsible for what anyone says...only what we listen to. Let people say what they want, maybe it will be so cathartic, they can move on without physical violence. Then everyone can go on about their business.
