In the 80s i had Atari 2600 and colecovision and i think those are 2 of the BEST consoles of all time! I think Atari 2600 was the BEST atari version ever..... More Games i loved on that console than the 2 newer ones (5200,7800) -- The graphics went downhill and didnt look as good,etc......... The 5200 version of Berzerk is garbage compared to 2600! (In my opinion) The 5200 version of dig-dug is CRAP compared to the 2600 version.... (Although i do think Colecovisions DIG DUG is better than atari's) I saw a couple 7800 versions of games i have on the 2600 and i was completly disgusted in the quality..... WHAT HAPPEND?? I think we all know..... Stuff went DOWNHILL as the 80s progressed (And continue to )
Snes probably had the most quality games. Super Mario World Contra III Street Fighter II Mortal Kombat Super Metroid Ken Griffey Jr Baseball NBA Jam Tecmo Super Bowl III Mario Kart Zelda Donkey Kong Country I felt many of the third party games were as good as the ones specifically for Nintendo, which were quality. I thought that was all around the pinnacle of console gaming as the fluidity of the gaming experience became much more noticeable compared to the 8 bit systems and many of these games became the prototypes to sequels that often revert to very similar gameplay even today. I have enjoyed many of the consoles that have followed tho and in many respects with how interactive and in depth some current games are, its difficult for me to see how one could rationally see how games have gone downhill but in terms of gameplay and fun factor I'd go with Snes.
define "nicest." do you just mean best overall, or most pleasant, most family friendly? "nicest" to me implies something other than simply best, but it could still be a few things. obviously as far as best looking goes, things keep progressing as time passes. as far as best overall, i don't know if i could really choose. really, you can't even compare systems more than a generation or so apart, because it's like apples to oranges. older games are great for the fact that you can (generally) just pick them up and play. good, simple fun. and those games were generally much harder, so that when you succeed you feel like you actually accomplished something. but then, you beat the game in an hour and your only option is to do the same exact thing again, so it gets boring. newer games are infinitely more complex, which means you have to actually devote time to just learning how to play the game. pick up and play is pretty much out the window on most current games. but then once you learn, you can get hundreds of hours of unique content out of a single game. most games now are a lot easier to actually beat, but that's almost necessary because they are so huge that you have to be allowed to access most of the game without spending a year practicing. games from all generations have a place in my opinion. just depends on what you're looking for at the moment.
When ever something comes up about consoles I always revert to what I had as a kid: ZX Spectrum + 3. Perhaps not a games console per se. But I loved playing games on it. Just using it, really. It was, perhaps, a low end computer rather than a pure games console. One day somebody will agree with me that this was the best computer ever made. I still can't touch type.
I just got an Snes emulator on my phone, both brings back memories and I'm getting to explore some games I never got to play. The only gripe I have about it is the directional pad is a bit rigid on the phone which has made fighting games like Mortal Kombat extremely difficult to play but the setup overall is really well presented and some of the other games work well and its a good way to occupy some time..
I never liked the SNES personally. Nintendo is too much of a kids system. For example they did not include blood on the Mortal Kombat games. And even today with the Wii, they go for cheap kid friendly games. Nintendo has a corner on that market though. For me the original Playstation was groundbreaking. I remember my first time playing games like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider as a little kid. The graphics look like crap now, but at the time it was "3d gaming" and my mind was blown.
My alltime favorite is the SNES as well because of the shit ton of not just good but GREAT FUCKING GREAT games on it. I also loved the Nintendo 64, but it's library was sort of weak. It's just that with the N64, the games that were good were AWESOME, such as Super Mario64, Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time
My favorite console ever is probably the Sega Genesis. My model 2 Genesis is the first console I ever owned, and I still have the same one connected to my bedroom TV right now. Games like Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star IV, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ristar and the Sonic games were just fantastic. And the 32X and Sega CD add ons had some damn good games too even iff the add ons themselves were horrible ideas.
I had a colecovision and an Adam . The Atari 2600 was a lot more popular , but Coleco had better graffics . There are emulitors that will run the games on windows . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleco_Adam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600 I remember having a game by fair child , but I am not sure if I can find much info on it . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_Semiconductor p.s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_Channel_F
Yes your right..... Atari 5200 was supposed to be a competitor for Coleco BUT IT WAS TRASH!!! -- Coleco is much better!! My choices for good consoles are 1) Atari 2600 2) Colecovision
Have to agree with poster who said the PlayStation one...grew up loving Nintendo then the Sega Genesis but once I played a PlayStation it was all over for me. Also, the Dreamcast gets honorable mention here as I personally believe it is one of the best systems ever made, just a little before its time...
OP, you know that colecovision and atari 2600 are responsible for nearly killing video gaming? they put out so much utter shit that it pissed everyone off and ruined interest in the market. However, nintendo and SEGA saved the day, with truly amazing offerings that are still great fun to play.
The same console that most people who are able to access this forum probably own whether they game or not. The PC.
WOW I CANT DISAGREE MORE!!!!! Atari 2600 is excellent and coleco is as well!!!!!! (Only game I like on Nintendo is SUPER MARIO BROTHERS) Wow,what a reply
PC gaming has not been relevant since the 90's IMO. Every few years there is still the PC exclusive game, but they are so few and far between it is not worth the investment. A PC person will tell you they have a superior machine compared to a Xbox or Playstation, but there is nothing to play. Game developers are not interested in the PC, just no money in them anymore.
Consoles are still evolving, but for retro games 16-bit, SNES for graphics and Sega Genesis for overall game performance (SNES had much more slowdown).
hmmmm, in order id say...with the add on for better graphics and sound i think the colecovision, next if i wanted to go just for graphics id pick the sega master system...nes had all the good games though...next, snes hands down...after that, ps1...then im gonna go sega dreamcast, because it was almost like a border console...didnt last long but had some amazing games...next x-box...after that, the 360 definately had the superior multiplats...finally im gonna go ps4...
