Drinking beers on my own while listening to schlager (dutch or deutch makes no difference) is one of the worst pastimes I can come up with :p

That's from my province. Clearly gronings or as they would say grunnings (not pronounced as you would think it would be in deutsch :p)

    Hello,

that was one of the first things I learned when I visited Amsterdam for the first time: my hotel was named Groenhof ;). A sheet with the pronunciation of combinations of letters helped me a lot.

Maybe your brother is the pirate? Have you seen him the last hour or so?

    Regards
    Gyro

If groen is written with 'oe' it is pronounced as the U in german grun. But in dutch the U sounds different than in english or german so that makes Groningen and 'grunnings' all different sounding than a word like groen. Neither has the u sound in it that the german word grun has :p I bet it is quite annoying for german or english people if they wanna say things right in dutch. Most of us appreciate the effort though :-D

    Hello,

it's not that easy ;). That's why I found the pronunciation table so helpful. Suddenly the names on the map and the anouncements of the tram drivers makes sense. Without that table Groenhof would have been 'Grönhof' (like in 'Döner', the fastfood) for me and nobody would have known the hotel or the way to it ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

ö = eu here. Although we write döner the same, phonetically it would be written deuner in dutch :p

I can imagine such a table is handy :D

My brother is frisian just like me ;)
