In this particular case, the region is considerably larger than any country in Europe. It's also a region that once tried to break away, and it still often gets treated like a conquered and occupied nation. To Northeastern industrialists, it was nothing more than a convenient third world country where the language and currency happen to be the same; a place to be used, abused, and discarded when it was no longer useful to them. So, there's a little more going on here than an ordinary regional difference.

Not in large enough numbers, unfortunately. Trump and Sanders are the first political heavyweights to have this conversation with the masses.

Major polling news! In the first nationwide opinion poll of GOP voters since the last debate (when Trump attacked the legacy of W) Ted Cruz (within the margin for error) has caught him! This is a MASSIVE shift in the numbers!

I wouldn't say that. Certainly Bill Maher believes Ted Cruz is worse than Trump, because he's always shifty and shady and sneaky in how he works. Trump, well at least you know what you're getting.

I still think Trump is just trolling the rednecks. The more I learn about his previous left leaning political views the harder it is for me to believe he is making a serious presidential run

I think he was starting to get in a panic because he didn't want the job, but didn't know how to get out of it without looking like a quitter. Attacking W and the Iraq war may be his ticket back to his luxurious private life.

This morning, the Pope said that Trump is not a Christian. Stating the obvious, it seems.

Do we? He's gone from left to right on every conceivable issue. And like Obama, his campaign consists of nothing but vague catch phrases "Make America Great" / "Hope Change"

I hate the whole "Make America Great" motto. What does that mean?

Every politician will say what the public wants to hear. Hence, Donald Trump.

Only a few or even none can fulfill their promises.

I don't think that he leaned to the left earlier has to matter a lot. He's an opportunist. Every smart person (esp. when they're not a politician in the first place anyway) should know better than restrain themselves by committing to one political side. I do have the same feeling about how serious he is about really becoming the next president (just because of some of his statements and how he handles himself in debates), but I'm not sure we can derive that from his previous leftist views.

Doesn't mean shit to a self reliant protestant christian. Technically the pope could state that all non catholics aren't real christians :p (I guess he just sees little point in proclaiming such a statement ;))

Do you really see Trump as a 'self reliant protestant Christian'?

I think he regards himself as self reliant, or at least he wants the rest of the world to think he is to the point he is believing it himself. But I just put that in because I was thinking (and writing) from the top of my head. It even counts for non self reliant protestants when we think of it. Especially conscious ones and not those who are simply mainly protestant christian out of tradition or because it is the prevailing religious majority in that country. Wth would a conscious protestant care about what the fricking pope states about them?

But I see Trump primarily as a wealthy individual with megalomaniac tendencies. His religious affiliation doesn't really matter to me at first. As I doubt it really matters to him. It's just a tool.

Yes, it's just a front to try to curry favour with US Christian voters.

I'd have thought that at least a few protestants might actually agree with the Pope - but sectarianism knows no bounds, and maybe the Pope saying that might even encourage a few to vote for Trump. Wiki says that 22% of Americans are catholic, so it might make them think twice before voting for this particular buffoon.
