Has anyone used this company's services? My mothers family has kept everything well documented, so there's no issue there... It's my dads side that's virtually unknown (the most he can tell me is that his parents were from Greece... I never met them). I feel that something has been deliberately hidden (for reasons I won't bore everyone with). I've searched through a ton of records using the free trial, though nothing interesting (or new) has come of it. I'm tempted to ship my DNA off (even though I'm not totally comfortable with that) in order to get some info. I'm not interested in finding living family members, I'd just like to fill in the missing gaps. http://www.ancestry.com/
I've been wanting to do that as well, but it makes me a little uncomfortable also. Is ancestry.com the best company for this?
i haven't. my mom's side of the family has always done a pretty good job of keeping track of who's who. and my dad's sister did a big genealogy thing a while back so now we know basically what's up with that side too.
Ive researched my family for years, i can go back to 920ad...so as you can see, im into it! ive also done a few 12 generation and less tree,s for people. Ancestry is a great site, certainly worth at least the basic tool..but there are others well worth pinning to your list. One of my favorites is the mormon site..family search, even though they can lead you to sites i dont use. https://familysearch.org/search/ I also use local parish online sites..its all around you, its just wanting it enough..time can fly when your having fun i guess. If you have a UK heritage, give me a shout!
My mom is an ameteur geneologist and she uses ancestry.com on occassion so it is pretty legit. My sister hired a scottish historian to trace our family before she went to scotland last year - if you can find someone who can do this for you i really recommend it. It was really reasonable too, just a little over $100 and she did a very thorough job.
I'm not sure whether ancestry.com would be the best one for me. Infact, prob not. As over half of my ancestors are from abroad - former Soviet Union and stuff. Plus, I might get an unpleasant surprise. Like when I was told I was related to some famous halfwit... : ( Alot of what I know was from a book about my mother's side, a website about my grandmother's side, and old documents etc handed down. Judging from my immediate family, would have really have wanted to know them? Prob not.
I tried the free stuff on there: seemed to be little more than a program to help you organise information you already had, never found anything new from it.
I have one part of my family back 15 generations before Odin of Asgard, who was born 215 b.c. Yes, the god Odin is my 65th great grandfather. Ancestry.com is a great tool. Another part of my family is stuck at my great-great grandfather entering the U. S. from England. Other parts of the family are stuck at various levels, somewhere in Europe. If I paid for other than U. S. membership I might find more; or I might not.
I've used Ancestry.com and found out some pretty interesting stuff about my family. My Great x9 grandfather was kidnapped by pirates from Ireland when he was 7 and brought to America. Sold as a slave in Virginia. He eventually married into the family that donated the land where Richmond, VA was settled. The airport is named after one of my ancestors.
We are related  Diana princess of wales and i, share the same 12th great grandparents...think i must have got the runt!
My family comes down through the Bigods, from Normandy in the 1,000's; then the 1,100's brought them to Norfolk, where they were Earls.
i dont really care about the dead people they had their times i care about the family that is here now well most of them anyway...there's a few i couldn't care less about
