This is true in the case of a western enlightened master called Adi Da . But he attained enlightenment through meditation itself.

You cannot find real truth of the total nature of existence by only using a substance from one world and certainly not a substance from a lower world. All of your physical life may take place in this world but you can only experience it in the world of your mind. without the mind you are a pile of organic material nothing more. what gives you life is not those chemicals but the consciousness that animates and experiences them in the form of a human body. A drug may give you a temporary glimpse of a different truth or reality (not always a higher one) but it cannot take you to that reality permanently and it does not give you a true and complete knowledge or understanding of that truth or reality. It's like watching a video or having a dream of/or even taking a vacation in Tibet and believing that you know it) it always caries the illusion of Maya (as the Hindus call this world of illusion)
A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing and knowing how to do something can be very dangerous if you do not have the knowledge (wisdom) of when and where to do it. I may know how to use a gun if I don't know when and where to use it i may do myself and others a great deal of harm. True freedom comes with great responsibility. When a drug of any kind is used for holy purposes it is used in a sacred and respectful manner, not for recreational purposes. To do so could unleash a Pandora's Box of pain. Using any drug for the wrong reasons will lead you, for some time to the wrong destination. Be very careful how you use anything. Ask an alcoholic if they have found "In vino veritas" that was a happy truth? eventually. Truth comes from a true seeker of truth not recreational use of anything enjoy what is meant to be enjoyed but abuse nothing or it will own you and your freedom in a dream will become a nightmare.

i think the question, depending on which ones, would largely be a matter of where they were at the time, particularly what was available there.
as also pointed out, substances are not the only way of altering the mind. there are exercizes that can be performed once the inner dialog has been stilled, that can be quite effective.
and i'm not saying those are the only alternatives to consuming physical substances either. none of which is to say they didn't also of course.
for the essenes, just as a wild guess, i would say whatever grew well in the dead sea valley at the time.
most of you though, probably had a better idea then i could even begin to guess, as to specific plant and other sources.

I'm putting my money on Syrian rue. Moses wouldn't have had to actually consumed it himself. Someone who did consume it could have "seen" a burning bush and heard voices. That trip story could have been incorporated into the story about Moses leading the Jews to wherever they thought they were going. It happens everyday.

Sleep paralysis, other abnormal sleep phenomena, good old-fashioned psychosis?

Most major religious writings are plagiarisms of other religions that existed eons before. Many of the same exact characters are used in all the different holy scriptures of just about every religion (with the exception of a few). Mormonism uses the same characters from the Christian bible. The entire old testimate can be found in the Islam Quran. Christianity piggybacked itself off of Judiasm. And the whole notion of Jesus being born from a virgin birth, is clearly a blatant plagiarism of Horace.

The only religion in recent history that I can give ANY credit to for being original in the writings of their own holy scripture is Scientology.

Yes, you're very correct. I haven't studied religions deeply, but I have skimmed over a lot of it the last decade and I'm in the same position you are. I find I am reading the same tales and stories over and over again, with different names and different places yet the same outcomes.

There's references in the bible too, about Hades. Old Testament.
It's well documented now that Easter is straight from Old Germanic traditions, not Christian. In fact, a lot of Christianity are recreated pagan tales from all over the globe.

I like religion though. I mean I'll bash it, but I honestly believe if a certain faith makes the wellbeing of people then that's truly beautiful and I dunno how you can hate on that. I have a lot of religious beliefs, but they're very different. And I even conflict massively against my heathen brethren. The difference is I honestly do think I'm looked out for by the ones I do speak up to.

I found a website which had an interesting take on the bibles main characters

    • Abraham lied. Sarah laughed at God's promises.
    • Moses stuttered. David's armor didn't fit.
    • John Mark was rejected by Paul.
    • Timothy had ulcers.
    • Hosea's wife was a prostitute.
    • Amos' only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning.
    • Jacob was a liar.
    • David had an affair.
    • Solomon was too rich.
    • Jesus was too poor.
    • Abraham was to old.
    • David was too young.
    • Peter was afraid of death.
    • Lazarus was dead.
    • John was self-righteous.
    • Naomi was a widow.
    • Paul was a murderer.
    • So was Moses.
    • Jonah ran from God.
    • Miriam was a gossip.
    • Gideon and Thomas both doubted.
    • Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal.
    • Elijah was burned out.
    • John the Baptist was a loudmouth.
    • Martha was a worry-wort.
    • Mary may have been lazy.
    • Samson had long hair.
    • Noah got drunk.
    • Did I mention Moses had a short fuse?
    • So did Peter, Paul and lots of folks.

In none too many words, lol...wtf and "very good". Let me begin. In recent archaeological digs of discernably ornate burial chambers, they found evidence of enlarged skull, typically location of crown chakras; the area of the brain to what end DMT is produced. LSD can, and often will, in a decent and loving setting give "my" preferred exstatic and beloved feeling...is it enlightenment? Is that Important? Life and experiences within are 3 things; multipliable by their ends in the rationale drawn up by years, wars, and feuds between what i can only imagine are very reasonable animals, gods, tribes, tectonic plates etc. life finds a way; it found a way into my mums car every time we got the enzyme(?) excrement from the local pay-eat-pray-piss cycle MINCEMEAT FACTORY!! - Whilst I was going through 2 years of linear/lateral brainpower/spiritwar on a personal, vocal and sometimes quite physical basis - paid for by the government.

Druids and Shamen are somewhat looked on with a humorous romance/nostalgic longing/protestful bliss and ignorance. They would generally be, in modern day times, your priests, your social workers (who are kind enough to meet at a cafe perhaps, rather than seize your loved ones from your homes and take their possessions to a "crime and probatory auction". lol. but on the offchance that you have an idea of what era druids had the mainstay popularity, mainly Europe, pre-roman (there is still an archdruid in the British Isles, interestingly enough), you would know we have some lovely psychedelic mushrooms, some cultural site called stonehenge, and many other stone areas (the legacy of "Highlander" broadcasts should be looked up, I'll refer back to that with added gusto....gimme a sec...)

It's undoubtable that drugs in all their notoriety, irresponsible, and somewhat perplexing nature that makes them resceptible to our brain chemistry makes the very matter of the artwork, the growth of civilisation, and the society we had today, yep, had...etc...um..what is Was. God's way of making a system of education through the last time a comet hit? I'd say thats 95% Dinosaurs-Draco---Lucifer, fire and brimstone, big loss of life. I might be in the wrong universe to start with the naming and shameng...but its straight out of the polite, overburdened math teacher trying to teach perspective ratio to multiplying average fractal algebra. blueprints.

Oh, and if god didn't/hasn't/isn't real, here's a lesson from the amoebic strain of anti-faith that i'd like to share. I am A Gnostic. not Agnostic. Those who might think they are a clever, quick, flashy trendy psychosocial tool of devolutionary bio-physics, please, type x on your palm and i'll see you in hell. I'll be the one handing out flyers for the new, hit band, "KYK". means, mode, median. lol.

lastly, i'm not against any particular way of thinking, logic, perplexing questions that can only be answered by shivering my nuts off and losing a bet about toenail brew. just phallacies like, nutty creationists. there is a logic in every town I've ever seen represented, where there are divisions. Gaia, Tengrii, Van Gogh, and Mohammed, they all have the same notion of grabbing the bulls key-meisters and strangling "the problem". reaction. humans. atm. lol.

ps. in respect to the analogy i was making about the 3 things, let me explain

negative.<<electrical system>>bad<"no">eg. pain, racism, war, famine.
neutral.<<masturbation, Earth, light vice, heavy petting, The Offspring's albums pre-conspiracy theory. - Solutions. In some regards, The Future.
positive.<<electrical system>>, consomation, fertility, the internet and all it's new found friends, lol.

If, in the future, near, far...we lack the intelligence to ask the question, is there something out there, then I'm sorry but we took the nuclear cookbook to the presalted, bile-pit, lake-of-fire metaphorical hell that Not considering your habits with not only yourself, your friends, family and lovers, but to your impact, In Your Future. Not Gods. Let him smoke whatever burning bush, whomever saw, that whomever spreading lines of sacrificed blood, upon war, upon hate, upon so-called heretics and "wierdos" or "smack-heads" ad infinitum, yea' let they who be within all of our archaic knowledge smoke their own sacramental pipe. PPS. stories making neural synapses flow with decisive retrospection and contemplation may not be just stories. lol. :gorgeous: :gorgeous: :gorgeous:

    heres a incy wincy bit of my youth;
Grandaddy; "I smoked too much crows feet this morning"
Me; "Did the wind tell you to. I mean, is that what is meant by a question. Hmm mm."[IMG]

Interesting take on the Bible's main characters?
    Lazarus was dead?
    Samson had long hair?
    David had an affair?

I see we are using the word "interesting" very freely.

Haha yeah, Davids affair is a great story though imo. But a lot of those 'summaries' are a bit lame. If we would take it further why not mention how Samson mistreated animals and ruined a whole towns harvest. But no he had long hair! Lots of people probably did.
Just like basically every person can be called a liar, lots of kings (and others) had affairs, etc. etc.

What if the "religious writers" weren't smoking anything, or inspired by a divine hand, or writing poetically...what if they simply weren't very smart? Seems the simplest scenario.
