Steve Earle - Billy Austin

This is one of my favorite Steve Earle songs of which I could listen to over and over. It is a sad story about a man who is put on death row for executing a clerk at a petrol store. During his waiting he starts to express his life, his side of the story and begins to question the validity of the death sentence.

The final words happen to be the first words, yet are so haunting by the end of the song when it literally brings you down a peg into the feelings of depression and heartache that the song so well produced. In such a way that I don't ever think I've listened to this song and sided with the court or the death penalty. Billy had done wrong, admits it, but I tend to pull for him anyway.

"My name Billy Austin. I'm twenty nine years old. I was born in Oklahoma, quarter Cherokee I'm told".

This sets a period where Steve became extremely political and even went to jail fighting for what he believed in which to me is courageous and Steve is a real hero of mine which I was able to meet twice this year. He became a top celebrity that fought to get rid of the death penalty.

Another fantastic and sad song is Ellis Unit One which tells tale of a prison guard that used to execute prisoners with use of lethal injection. The story is about a family line though where even the main characters father used to be a prison warden in the time of the electric chair. He says that somewhere along the lines, folk just too civilized for the electric chair and the injection eased their minds. "We just put 'em down at Ellis Unit One". The last verse is about seeing them die, and seeing their families reaction. He has a dream that he is the one being put to death, and although a devout religious Christian, Jesus cannot hear his calls, Jesus doesn't live at Ellis Unit One. I believe the song was used in the movie "Dead Man Walking". I haven't seen it though.
