They don't leave packages here if nobody opens the door (they do try to give it to a neighbour though, and then leave a note for you so you know the package is at your neighbours). When I do open the door and get a package that's not for anybody on my adress the postman/delivery guy just takes the package with him again. It has happened once or twice.

I kept getting bank statements and other bank correspondence for the previous tenant's business.
I would cross out my addy and note on the envelope that addressee moved, new address unknown.
    But they kept coming.

So eventually I call his bank, who transfers me to their security division.
Plus they put me thru the 3rd degree, even though I wasn't the issue.
They were so reluctant to change anything, because I wasn't their client.
I pointed out that for a guy with a business, he should realize he wasn't getting statements or other bank mail cause he hadn't updated his addy.

I told them I didn't want them sending any mail for this person's biz to me.
I knew that the previous tenant was busted for a big grow and I didn't want the authorities thinking I was involved or that his business was still at my addy.

I finally started to open his bank statements, and told the bank I was doing that because they kept sending them to my addy.
The statements revealed lots of big cash deposits & withdrawals.

Finally the mail stopped after my second round of calls.

It happens here occassionaly....Getting neighbor's packages here....easy...walk them over to them....and a few times...look up the name in telephone book...call the person and then meet them somewhere to deliver it to them.

I had this happen to me a couple years back. A package was delivered to my home by mistake; the correct address was on the label. I had the best of intentions on walking it rightful owner, but I had put it off and off and off. Finally, after about 6 months, I thought it would be more weird to bring it to them. I opened it. I know I know. It happened to be a giant pair of sports shoes. I ended up donating them to Salvation Army when I went through and donated a lot of stuff many moons later.

That's a good system I for deliveries. But I don't know if I'll trust some of my neighbors to hold info it for me.

Ah yeah, that is common here too (and sometimes for good reason :D): if one does not want to have it delivered at a neighbour's that can easily be stated. Instead of getting a note in your mailbox that the package is at your neighbours becaus you weren't home, it says they tried to deliver it but took it with them again. People can pick it up at some depot then or have the option to get it delivered at a time they please. When going with the latter option it is common to have a deilvery guy come at your door about 3 times when you're not home. Ah well keeps the economy runnning I guess :p
