At this point, I should add AGE to what I prefer to see on the left of a person's post.

    Why?

Because I think that a post has more meaning when I have a sense of the background of a person, like how old they are (and therefore how much they've done and seen, possibly), and where they live (so I know, like, if it's freezing cold there, or if they're in friggin' Australia or something and not the U.S., or if they're on a tropical island...). It makes things more interesting, and makes a post more "complete."

Tracked by the mob? People aren't using their real names here. And if they were so worried about it, they wouldn't be posting on the internet at all, right? And likewise, how would a murderer stalk someone here simply by virtue of their having "Peoria, IL" next to their name? How is that going to enable the killer to find them in all of Peoria? Puhlease. Any real arguments against listing this stuff voluntarily? The silly unrealistic arguments against it are wearing thin.

I figure if someone really needs to know my location, they might as well ask for it.

Otherwise I like to keep the rest of the posters on their toes.

I'm getting thin? Thanks! I've been watching what I eat and getting a little more exercise... I'm glad someone noticed! :p

    So Lodui, where are you?

Every time I see your name, I think of "Lodi," which I think is in California. There's a Creedence song called "Lodi"... "Oh lord, stuck in Lodi, again..."

Although I prefer not to think of being stuck in you... That's kind of a gross image.

Why do you have see a bee in your bonnet over this, Jeffrey? If you want to know that badly why don't you just ask them?

It's not a bee in my bonnet, Kiz, and I'm not gonna be upset over it tomorrow or something. But I'm not going to ask or PM everyone in a given thread, "Hey, by the way, where are you located?" because that would be a big bother. But there's a space to say it once and then it'll be there for every one of your posts, and people opt not to do it, or they opt to give a smartass answer instead. I just don't get it, and so I decided to mention it. Is that a crime? From the responses I've gotten, it seems like some think it is.

What if the PM system sent you messages that didn't say who they were from, and all they had was a button to send back your reply in the blind, so you could ask them, directly and specifically, "By the way, who are you, who sent me this message?" That wouldn't be any fun, and would be extra unnecessary steps.

I think it's nicer to know that little bit about people -- age, gender, location. It rounds out my mental image of whom I'm speaking with.

And for fuck's sake, I'm just making "conversation" here. I post about something, anything, that has the potential to engender a discussion, and everyone's ready to jump down my throat and assume that I'm all twisted up about something.

At least I'm coming up with "random thoughts" thread ideas! :$

I have such an unusual name (first and last both) that people can find my exact address and phone number if I gave them the city. I used to do that, but I stopped after some asshat did start to bug me at home; a foot fetishist (not a joke and I certainly don't want to imply all foot fetishists would do so!) called me at home and only stopped after I called the cops on him. So no, I am not providing my location.
Oh, and another reason is that often when I post about US issues with people who know I live in the Netherlands, I'll get comments like 'well, maybe in Europe, but here...' and then I have to come back and explain I've lived in the US for five years so I do know somewhat know what I'm talking about... that's happened a lot too and while it's far less annoying than the first, it does get old eventually.

I like not knowing the gender or age of some people on here. For the most part, it makes my experience on the forums more entertaining because I get to guess from their posts--and often times I get to laugh when I discover that someone whose posts make them seem 14 is actually closer to 30.

im not sure why the info is important? is it to place ppl into little boxes neatly categorised? or maybe to be able to indiscriminately judge on gender, race, nationality and age? i do not agree that it is even relevant, although i have complied with some of it. anonimity is a right if you wish to retain it. anyway...ask. if you are truly interested, that is.

You're the one who start off your discussion by calling some of us "lame". People are going to get a bit defensive.....
