The Inaugural Address of President Bush left me skeptical of his assertions. He proclaimed to the world that America will seek to spread democracy to the rest of the globe. Stating, “it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.”

The Bush administration has twice shown their willingness to use force in operations of “regime change.” The president made statements that appear to promote what could be more pre-emptive warfare. Bush expressed his concerns that we are at threat from Middle Eastern nations. He stated “For as long as whole regions of the world simmer in resentment and tyranny - prone to ideologies that feed hatred and excuse murder - violence will gather, and multiply in destructive power, and cross the most defended borders, and raise a mortal threat.“ But this comes four years too late, assuming everyone still remembers the events of 9/11. Meanwhile, due to a poorly planned invasion, Iraq has been infiltrated by terrorist groups and a growing insurgency that was not and could not have existed in Iraq before the occupation.

This all comes only one week after Condoleezza Rice, during her Senate confirmation hearing, denounced Iran and Syria as “outposts of tyranny.” Bringing back memories of past accusations against Saddam Hussein in which she stated that he “cavorted with terrorists.” The statements of the past weeks resemble those made before the Invasion of Iraq and cause me to conclude that another invasion is likely to come. This can be more compounded by Bush’s assertion, “We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.”

Obviously, the Bush Administration is preparing to take actions to end some oppression somewhere, but what oppression and where? And why is it our burden? I can understand supporting existing resistance in those countries, but this time we have to let the people do it themselves. Let us just hope the President remembers his past mistakes and their consequences on the security of our nation.

Mostly it was just a bunch of hot air. He gave absolutely no indication of how, or where we would be doing this um . . thing that he talked about. It is entirely unpracticeable; at best the speech is going to be saved and pulled out every time we do something like backing Yuchenko in the Ukraine, but this is little more than opportunism. That we backed Yuchenko is a positive thing certainly but Yuchenko's victory was not (and similar situations will not be) due to anything in Bush's speech or anythign that we did..

The worst possibility is that Bush was merely telling us what excuae will be used when we invade and annailate soverign nations.

All I got from his speech is that there are likely to be more invasions in the next few years. All he did was confirm our suspicions in a sugar-coated manner.

I say we sleep at night by meditation and knowing we have the option to always be a "refugee" to another country-if they will accept and tolerate us being Americans.
