I think we may have to try and agree on a definition of cultural appropriation. I think it's somewhat of a power issue, in that a dominant culture is using something from a less dominant culture. Particularly with the Pocahontas example, it reminds us that one culture overpowered another. Now I see where it's innocent for a little boy or girl to want to dress up like Pocahontas or another Native American from a Disney movie. I get that. It's on the parents at that point to explain that the costume is inappropriate because those people were violated! We have totally normalized this, and yet somehow, it still doesn't sit right with me when I analyze the facts. We should acknowledge their loss and stop normalizing the use of their garb.
Well, i'll say this much. People are delicious. And there are always one or two i save for such occasions. Real flesh is the way to go. lol
Cringy babies crying over literally nothing. NOTHING is being taken away from these people. If the dress is authentic and chants and prayers were made for every bead then it is a tribute to their culture. NOTHING IS TAKEN. If it is a fun parody costume, or native STYLE, then it has no MEANING to them. AGAIN, NOTHING IS TAKEN from them. Does a Mexican STYLE pizza appropriate anything away from Mexicans? Fuck no! Get the fuck over yourselves. If you want to be fascist oppressive freedom hating babies, stop appropriating bingo halls and go live off the grid in some tents.
True, i only go organic though (the things some humans consume...!). Also, gotta love this body shaving trend! Saves so much time and effort (esp with certain males)!
Think about how people feel about Christianity how sensitive they are. Maybe that will get into the white man's skull. You don't like when Jesus is a joke do you?
The thing is native americans have the right to think and express what they think and how they feel about such a (non)issue. Just like everybody else. But what right are you talking about exactly? If an other kind of american (or someone even more foreign) wants to walk around with paint on their face that looks a lot like indian warpaint or a replica of an indian headdress they can. If a native american is offended by that that's ok really. Think about it. What's the issue? The problem starts, i would think, if someone would wear an actual native american headdress with some spiritual or cultural significance for entertainment (or simply said: the wrong or inappropriate) reasons. People can replicate and wear whatever they want. Certainly if it isn't ment to offend in the first place in any way. As seems certainly the case with like 99% of those feathery indian headdresses.
But pizza is lessened, for sure. I handled it this way with my kid: book/film character, no matter ethnicity, was fine, no makeup to change skin tone. Generic representation of a people was out. Gender bending was fine. Kiddo did go as a Young Republican one year. "It's the scariest thing I can think of." I made praying mantis, vampire cat, dinosaur, and Gromit costumes and after that, Kiddo built the costumes. When it was my turn to walk the pack of kidlets, I broke out my RenFaire clothes and had a vote on what to answer if anyone asked who/what I was. Kiddo said: lost rennie. Every.damn.year.
I found an Optimus Prime Halloween cap/mask. That is all I know of my costume so far. Probably my ninja bandana as well. A sporty coat. Badly fitting jeans perhaps? mmm yesum.
Thanks for posting this, Annie. It's videos like this that really show how much damage you can do to a culture by depicting them the wrong way. You are so woke my brother.
Appropriation is the only way some of these folks get any culture. I say do what you want. I feel sorry for people who are over sensitive and are offended all the time. Looks exhausting.
If its not done to disrespect its not disrespectful. In the majority of instances it seems not done to disrespect or offend people. Both sides of the argument seem to have people exaggerating or exploiting this issue. I think this includes the ones who seriously use pepe the frog as an example
I was thinking about cultural appropriation this morning, but not in the context of Halloween. First, I think cultural appropriation occurs any time someone from one culture uses something that they don't fully understand from another culture. Some of you guys might hate me for saying this, but I think dreadlocks are a great example of this. And I know some of you have dreads! Lol. Sorry. Another one is Hawaiian shirts! And they've sold out into it! You can get Hawaiian shirts in Hawaii and they're marketed to the consumers who are tourists that basically don't understand what it means to be Hawaiian at all. I'm actually very guilty of this one myself. I have at least 2 Hawaiian shirts; one of which I wear nearly every week! So there I am exploiting Hawaii. I think I'll get rid of that shirt now that I think of it.
That’s like saying that since electricity is a white person invention, other cultures shouldn’t be allowed to use it.
Wait...Arabs can dress in kimonos but not American born Armenians? I'm confused...I thought we were supposed to disguise ourselves from the evil spirits.
