Rachmaninoff suffered a serious period depression and thought that he would never write another note. The cloud lifted and his magnificent second piano concerto was born. To me, that second movement is one of the finest pieces of piano composition in the world. I am not a particular fan of Rolando Villazon, but he is perfectly suited to this production and who could possibly wish for a better Mimi. Opera taken away from the opera house stage, is all too often a complete disaster, but this production is one of the rare exceptions. The 20 minute section starting at 0:57 must be both musically and visually one of the most moving works ever.
