Hello. I’m mountain goat, AKA Laura the van lady. Lol. I built my own campervan over the last year. I finished it in June , and I’ve been living the van life since then. I’ve been slowly head west on I-90 all summer. It’s been incredibly fun, but lonely at times. I plan to share my stories here. I don’t know what else to say!! Thanks, love, L.L.
Welcome!! That’s an awesome lifestyle! I’m jelly! I can’t wait to hear about your life. Laura is a beautiful name btw.
Looks like you figured out how to post pictures. Very nice....and nice van also. If you ever come across Blue Highways by Billy Least Heat Moon, 1982, you might want to pick up a copy. It's about a guy who set out on a three month tour in his van on blue highways across America. Blue highways are the back roads marked in blue on a road map. His trip: It was a best seller for 42 weeks. Another good book, very rare, is Divine Right's Trip, by Gurney Norman, 1972. It first appeared in The Last Whole Earth Catalog which was one of the bibles of the hippies way back when. Enjoy yourself and stay safe.
Hi Mountain Goat, I'm a big fan of mountain goats. Good on you for your life choices.. I believe that voluntary loneliness can be incredibly helpful to self development.
Be good if a new Whole Earth Catalog would come out now. Stuart (or Stewart) Brand is still alive I think, but maybe his day is over.
So did you have plans to go by or did you just design it yourself? I'd very much like to see how you did it.
I designed it myself, but I stole all the ideas from the internet. This is actually my second camper van . The first was a VW Eurovan.
I've been thinking of doing my Chrysler minivan, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It would have to be slide in unit as I still use it as a minivan. As the seats fold into the floor, I was thinking of making a plywood platform to raise a foam mattress up about six inches, then use the space underneath for storage. In the back another plywood unit to hold a stove, etc. Accessible from the lift gate. Everything removable. Magnetic screening for the windows and side doors. Getting tired of towing our motorcycle camper behind the van.
Very cool. I'm a carpenter/electrician and worked on a campervan last fall for a young couple, who are doing the same thing. A very neat project, wish I would have taken pics. Wish I could do the same thing. I look forward to your story.
Glad to have you here Laura. Amazing what you're doing. I had about a two year experience similar to you, it is beyond incredible. Only difference is a girl and I did it in a small travel trailer opposed to a van. I am sooooo looking forward to hearing your story, brings back tons of memories.
Very cool. Just capped off a two-week trek from L.A. to Portland, here, and, man, if roadtrippin' ain't the way to do a vacation...
