The first time I saw the movie had been some years ago, and to this day the mere thought of it excites me. After seeing it for the first time, I remained changed forever. It had awakened me. The sense of astonishment, awe and wonder that it left with me has had an impression that will last for the rest of my life. It is difficult to describe in words without excessive amounts of writing, so I will simply recommend it to anyone who has not yet seen it. For those who did not understand it, I advise you to re-watch it until you do. Also, reading Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness before or after watching Apocalypse Now will help in understanding the brilliance behind the movie. In fact, much of the brilliance of the movie comes from the book itself, but never has it been so beautifully illustrated than on the screen.
It's in my top 3 personal best films ever. Just wish I could have the chance to see it in a full on cinema. I always like to get drunk and smoke copious amounts of marijuana when I'm in the frame of mind to watch such stuff. A genuine 5 star classic.
I think this is one of the few movies that is better than the book. "Heart of Darkness" is definitely worth reading, but it has nothing on Marlon Brando.
No they are not. He talked rubbish during the filming and it was all dubbed in after, during the filming a fly goes in his mouth, you can see him picking it out. If you watch the movie Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102015/ You can see excerpts of what Brando actually said....it reveals that neither Brando nor Coppola could agree on what to say and with Brando demanding a million dollars a day time was of the essence so they just shot the film and dubbed the words in after if what he said didn't make any sense. The documentary (difficult to source...try ebay) is essential viewing for anyone that likes this killer film.
