The Indians were surrounded, could they retreat,? Possibly, but their stated purpose was an attempt to defuse the situation.
The boys were boys. I'll repeat, their sponsors had no right to allow them to get into that situation. The first responsibility of teachers or chaperones is to protect their charges. They failed in this case.

The Indians had a right of free travel. Should they have approached the boys, maybe, maybe not, we don't know what would have happened if they didn't intervene.

I don't know what Nathan Phillips heard, absence of the chant on video doesn't mean it didn't occur, so I didn't weigh in on it.

As far as the smirk, really? As humans we have highly developed facial communications. Unfortunately they can be interpreted differently by different people
    [IMG].
After having worked with students from 7 to 12th grade for over 34 years I know what my interpretation of that look is. I've seen it hundreds if not thousands of times. Nick Sandman is playing to his audience as we can clearly see on the faces of the boys behind him. He is showing defiance and daring Nathan Phillips to enter his space. He is attempting to intimidate Nathan Phillips by making him feel uncomfortable. Nathan Phillips does not return his stare as that would be accepting a challenge. Phillips stopped his forward motion and held his ground. To retreat may have signaled a weakness and led to further intimation or worse.
Sandman is not making any attempt to appear non threatening. If he wanted to appear non threatening he would have lowered his eyes and wiped the smirk off his face.
You don't have to raise a fist to appear threatening.

But that's my interpretation, you can have your own. I would enjoy seeing your reaction in a similar situation.

Putting aside the fact that a private tax free Catholic school has entered its students into a political and moral debate by attending an anti abortion rally and assuming they produce well rounded students by also letting them attend pro abortion rallies and then form their own opinions.....if they were told how to conduct themselves, they failed miserably.

This is what a responsible news organization does. If it makes a mistake, it retracts it.

As far as Nathan Phillips lying here are the statements I found:
And just a quickly on enlistment age to those who post that the age was 17 with parental consent. I have a cousin who was commander of a tank in Vietnam in 1969 at the age 16, meaning he entered the Army before being 16. He had gotten into trouble with the law and was given a choice to go to jail or the Army.

These are high school students on a school sponsored outing. I don't know if you're aware of this but high school students are not granted the same free speech rights as non schooled adults at least on school property, so it would be an interesting case.

And yes, they should have left the area. The chaperones screwed up big time.

So looks like there's definitely more to the story. Glad I read this thread, see this is why I just hate the news nowadays.

Pro-life is not pro-life because they aren't pro-life for immigrants, or for women who have the right to choose. They're only pro-life until birth. If you don't like abortions, great, don't get them. But shaming and harassing women, trying to take away women's rights; that's not and never will be "pro-life".

Those kids shouldn't have been there, and certainly not with MAGA hats. really hard to feel sorry for anyone smiling smugly at a Native American with a MAGA hat.

Oh no! The Native Americans are playing drums. How threatening.
    And they were here first.

  11. I agree, they were being encountered by racist assholes and should have left. But they didn't have to leave, they had every right to be where they were.

  12. They have every right under our constitution to wear a hat if they want and it can say just about anything (if you've seen what they sell at truck stops).

As for who was here first, where has that ever worked on this planet? If you can't defend your nation, someone will take it from you. Whining about shit that happened centuries ago does little to change this. But it does give some groups an avenue for cashing in on taxpayer resources.

Regardless, we're diverging from the subject of the thread wildly.

The "Tribal Elder" (isn't that what they call all old Indians) has turned out to be a fraud (USMC refrigeration mechanic who never saw Vietnam) and a known troublemaker during other encounters with school groups. His latest gig was trying to disrupt church services with his little drum circle. Face it, the guy is a known troublemaker who was looking for exactly what he found, people to take advantage of, while drumming up fake sympathy.

I can only wonder what the rest of the tribe thinks of him.

By the way, what tribe is that anyway? And where is their council on this event. Seems like the media would have run that one down at the onset of this. But reporters these days are a lazy lot who only look for sensational shit they can easily market. Wouldn't it suck if the media came after hippies like that?

  13. I wasn't speaking of the march, marches in this country are generally stupid and useless.

So true to form it has now its come full circle. CNN blames the event on people wearing MAGA hats. As do some of the posters here. Yet if a kid wears a rainbow shirt or hat to support the gay movement and bad things happen to them, its that damn intolerant right wing agenda to blame for that also.

Damn them, showing a political preference. What kind of asinine country do they think it is? They can't do that....errrr......OK wait, Its Stormy.....no its Russia, OK no its racism...wait no errrr....it's rich people.

Free Speech is only what we (the liberal left) says it supposed to be. If it doesn't, we throw temper tantrums.

Trump is in the process of getting re-elected. He doesn't need any help from his supporters. The left can do it for him.

He was brilliant. A simple baseball cap is causing the left to incinerate themselves.

So the Parkland students, whose friends were gunned down in front of them, are too young to get into politics, but ..... private school kids (from a state ranked 41st in education, 45th in economy, 45th in healthcare, and 2nd in welfare dependency) busses kids the same age to DC to protest against women's rights .... that school by the way pays no federal taxes. I dunno, seems kinda hypocritical to me

  16. What's interesting is how politics has infiltrated so much of our lives these days. Not because we want it, but because political operators want it. So they encapsulate their message into snappy slogans and demonize the other party as being less than human.

I remember how SNL used to poke fun at Reagan. They portrayed him as simple-minded and incompetent when the opposite was true. Reagan didn't flinch. Back then comedy was still funny and only skimmed politics to get laughs. They weren't trying to deliver a "message" which is why comedy sucks the way it does now.

I didn't think it would take too long.

4 years as a marine and he is discharged as a private.

Takes a special person to manage that.

I think Pocahontas just found her running mate.

Yeah and SNL did racist skits with Eddie Murphys takeoff on the Little Rascals and gay humor with the skits on Rosey O'Donnel and fat shaming Oprah skits.

    Where was the outrage?

This is such a non-troversy. I can’t believe this thread went on for 8 pages. This is actually a news event I tried to avoid and ignore, but my news feed is filled with this Covington incident.

Whoopi Goldberg even admitted that she and her viewed had a snap judgement of the MAGA kids: "Why do we keep making the same mistake?"

Joy Behar : “Because we’re desperate to get Trump out of office. That’s why”

At least powerful democrats can admit that their desperation causes them to ruin the lives of average kids with millions less than they do. These people are pathetic through and through
