I say old tires too... Theres a book called woodstock crafters (or something like that, im not looking at my bookshelf so im not sure) and it has directions on how to make your own sandled... I think it oop (out of print) But amazon would have it. And its full of other useful information

It'd be easy to cut them out of thick leather if you like a thin sole. Or as Soulless Chaos said, hemp rope works. I'm not sure what the technique is called but you can twist a pretty thick rope, and then work it the same way people made the old straw beehives. Other kinds of natural material like straw and grasses also work.

That's what I was thinking, I have an old book that shows how to make grass/straw sandals, and you could just as easily use rope, and lash it together with the thinner hemp. :D They looked pretty comfortable. :D

I made my own hemp sandles. Actually, I had a pair of thin soled flip flops I always wore, and the straps finally broke on them, so I ripped out the whole bottom part of the sandles and just used the really thick hemp, and hot glued it all the way around the bottom, working from the outside inward, and then made the straps, just like you would make a hemp braclet, but I seperated it into two, - everyone loves them.
    good luck!
