oh i like that film .. take away the epic 'never gonna happen' aspect and it was good.. Childhood dream, adult obssesion , re connection with father .. religous understanding and on the other hand intolerance.. plus you almost see jodies breasts (never a bad thing:p ).

I don't think that is a fair comment .. projects individuals might find more worthy (that might find themselves haveing funding problems) than others happen in every administration.. SETI is not dead.. and it has nothing to do with Bushs religous beliefs..

And 'star wars' wich was erm ???????

This may be true, however it was a very important scene in a movie like this. What it did was convey the fundamental mystery and romance behind the SETI concept- which is basically playing with a radio with a really enormous antenna and trying to pick up that rare, enigmatic signal from way out there. This scene resonates with anyone who has grown up playing with radios (like me). Of course modern SETI research involves a bunch of computers sitting there crunching digitized signals- an image which would bore just about anyone.

Another good recent movie about radio is "The Dish", which takes place at a little satellite receiving facility in the middle of a rural Australian sheep pasture. The quirky small-town people who run the place get a surprise call from NASA because they are suddenly needed to capture the TV pictures from the first moon landing.

If i had the time yesterday i would have said prety much what sweet dream said.. and add that it is unlikely anyone would be climbing into a pod and then dropped into a wormhole..:p its not the point i suppose, it was a fantasy film, and i came away from it thinking of 'out there' and to a certain degree it lead me to post this thread.. anything that gives it a thumbs up is alright imho.. though i wish they would not put in the dumb ass assistant that always says some crap line ... this film 'it aint local' shut up you fool of course it is not local you are listening too friggin stars (and such) .

ANYHOO no boring trailers at the end (anyway only sad people watch all the credits :) ) ... just actual terms and projects is enough so that people if they wish can find out more ..this was done in the film by using SETI .

where were we anyway oh yeah .. searching for the god particle ;)

I think this actualy happened ... because i don't think we had communication satelites in space at the time ? or something.. Australia being on the other side of the planet to america .. they would be in direct line with appolo 11 rather than america.. at certain times of the day (or night)..it was not fantasy i dont think.. this was the reason the film was made in the first place..again i think

oh i see .. not that it did not happen the way it was portrayed.. bit early for me today .. tired hahahahaha

"The Dish" was a great film, but like most treatments of science and technology in film, somewhat fictionalized. The movie almost completely ignored the existence of the main Australian NASA tracking site, called Honeysuckle Creek.

Yeah, the "Right Stuff" did a real hatchet job on Gus Grissom, as well. And he wasn't around to defend himself and his fellow astronauts...

I think the main problem with these type of films is that the studios feel the need to "dumb down" the content to appeal to a mass audience. So they omit or gloss over "boring" technical/scientific material and play up (or completely invent) anything controversial in an attempt to add "human interest". Unfortunately, for most viewers, these films start to BECOME history, ignoring what REALLY happened...

If anyone wants to see a much better treatment of the US space program (particularly Apollo), I HIGHLY recommend the 12-part HBO miniseries "From The Earth To The Moon". Covers the program from nearly every angle, from the astronauts themselves to the men and women who worked to actually design and build the hardware. All the segments were great, but the 2 episodes that stand out for me were the one focused on the design and testing of the Lunar Module and the episode covering Apollo 12 from the perspective of rookie astronaut Alan Bean.

    A must-see for any space geek! :)
