i don't know that i endorse the idea that anyone "should be" watching any movies. i'm not anti-movie or anything, but i don't really think there's enough benefit to viewing any movie that i would put it in the "should" category.

District 9 is a good movie as well! Have you seen it?

I sense you secretly are rigidly against all movies.

I watched a little gem of a movie last night. It was the most realistic coming of age story I've seen and this actor..Miles Teller..is really charismatic

It's probably not for everyone though, the pacing is slow

I tuned out the big screen long ago , disgusted with remake after remake as well the lack of script writing in most of today's films. Rubbish !

Sex, sex, sex, add some violence, wee bit more senseless killing, sexual innuendo, now throw in a political undercurrent and this passes for a major hit movie.

Pass me the Pepto - Bismol please !

zootopia, if anyone yet hasn't seen it.

that somehow came into existence in spite of its creators origeonal more mundane formulaic intentions.
by simply having changed which character to be the principal protagonist, it proceeded from there, to create a story with real depth,
that has a lot that needs understood, by every human living today.

(avatar is of course a story about history, that still isn't allowed to be told in history books.
the whole, what columbus was really all about story. yah, the 'aliens' are us.

i have to admit the whole idea of that one, is too painful to watch,
and all too familiar if you have any jewish, black, or indiginous blood)

i agree that 'blockbusters' are formulaic and cleched. which is what is to be expected, when they're all about bringing in little green pieces of paper,
more then the visual communication of any idea remotely close to the edge of, let alone outside of, the box of the all too tediusly familar.

dark crystal, the henson and oz one with the uru and skesies and augra and the gelflings, was another good one,
though simple in story line, it pioneered to my way of thinking, a really believable 'alien-ness'.

there have been and will continue to be, many visual delights.
which to my mind are more readily satisfyingly achieved by cg and other animation,
    then by live human actors.

if you want story though, you pretty much need to read, and that outside of mainstream pap as well.

No, but now I shall attempt to.

  19. I don't get why there used to be so much original material in movies, and good material at that. And nowadays it seems like it's all the same. I suppose I don't watch that many movies, though. I don't think there's anything that's imperative to see in 2019. Whatever happened to your Breakfast Clubs, your Ferris Buellers, your Stand By Mes, your Back to the Futures? Etc. etc. They just remake everything...there's never anything original that's really good. And dramas are almost passe. *shrug*
