I'm not saying I am or plan to do this, I'm going to move to and get a job in cali, but I'm always thinking what if I lose it and end up on hard times and end up only being able to afford to live and sleep in a car, you never know. I was wondering...........

What cities in Cali do you think it would be safest to do this?

And what cities in Cali would I most likely get car-jacked, mugged or harrassed?

These are very important questions, your answers will be greatly appreciated since it could dictate whether I'm safe or not in the future, thank you.

Laws have gotten pretty strict here in Santa Cruz, but there are still a number of folks who do live either in cars or vans here. Prepare to move around alot though.
Larger cities would probably give you the most hassles.
    Best of luck to you.

You used to be able to camp out in National Forests, you just have to change campsites every couple of weeks. But I think most charge now. We also used to go on National forest roads and just find a clearing. But Cali is probably the most strict place cause it's just too crowded (esp the southern half)

i lived in the humboldt national forests for awhile
some areas are congested but if you have a car and aren't as lazy as me you can find good spots
I also met this really cool ol' dude named doc who lived in a small motorhome
he would park it at arcata central park durring the day when he wanted to be around people
people that talked to him for more than an hour would end up crying
I didn't cry but my eyes watered
    ehehehe

I always wonder why people refer to California as Cali. When I was growing up, Cali was a city in Columbia. And Frisco was a town in Texas (NOT California!).

I've known people who have claimed to live in cars all over the state. During times of greater wealth, the cars were parked in a garage and their hygiene was met at a gym. Personally I would never recommend that lifestyle for anyone. It can't be good for your spine.

Well Glenn good luck to you! I hope you don't have to live in a car..but these folks have at least offered some rather good advice. But good call going somewhere warm, in case you DO have to live in the car. At least you won't freeze. What kind of job are you looking for?

If you do it in Beverly Hills, at least you'll have a good address.

I would say in Arcata in Humboldt county where I live. Half the town lives in their car anyway and the other half doesn't even have that to live in.

theres a lil beach on hwy 101 bout 20 miles north of arcata, 2 miles south of orick, you can stay for 1 month everyyear for free. if you dont have a car then i think you can get away with stayin longer, just put a different colored tarp over your tent.

You guys give good advice, but if I live in my car next to a lot of homeless people or forest people, won't they get jealous, and try to steal my car if they don't have one themselves?
