Ive been offered a different job here at work, they will take me on as long as i loose my dreads. It'll pay more and i will get to go out on site and it should be great. But my dreads!!! Its insulting they can ask me to do it. Some people here say just get rid and others say show them the finger. It could be a really good oppertunity, but its a huge thing for me, after all my hard work being dreaded!
How much is the job worth to you? And what is it? On principle I'd say keep the dreads, corporations have no right to suppress personal expression....
I can only say what I'd do, and I wouldn't take the job. I'm strongly opposed to such 'dress codes' that ban things that don't actually hurt anyone, for 'social' reasons only... okay if there's a good reason for it, like not wearing long, loose hair when you're working with machinery it can easily get caught in, or shoes & helmets in a construction zone, that's cool... but if it's just that dreads aren't considered acceptable because the boss or the customers might not like them, I personally wouldn't even think about getting rid of them... of course that's just me, I don't have a family or other long-term responsibilities that I need a carreer for either..
Thats my feelings exactly. The only problem is if i don't take it i may be asked to leave my existing one as there is very little work on offer at the moment. I can't stand corporations putting their foot on this kinda thing. In this office they haven't had a problem....so why should some little director get say over my hair....*sigh* im not all down about it but it is kinda annoying me! Not sure what to do!
if you're black kick up a shit about racism or something, if you're white tell them they wouldn't do this to a black guy - guilt trip em dude!
What's the job though? Unless they can bring you up on hygiene laws, you may be able to argue discrimination on this one....
yea i was going to say this is discrimination. However if you fought unfair dissmissal thaey would give the "not enough work for that post" and not bring the new job into account. But you can definatly fight it because it is discrimination. Its also true if you were coloured they would not say anything because of the cultural fear of being called a racist, in return they are being racist againt white peole in doing so.Thereason they wouldnt think twice about someone who is coloured is because it is part of the rastafarian relgigion and chances are they wont have two clues about the difference between someone whos has rastafarian dreads or personal growth dreads. However you could use this to your advantage and state it is part of your spiritual beleif to have them, that in your beleifs they hold part of you and its slander against your beleifs to get rid of them for anyone but your own mind.
At The Moment Im A Cad Technician, But The New Post Is A Quantity Surveyer....i Enjoy What I Do Now But The Small Amount Of Work Around Means They Need To Move Me To A Different Department. Its 3 Floors Above Me So Its Not As If Im Moving Far So The Change Is Annoying!
