The Spirit Dog takes to the sky
because his owners have let him die
    they chained him out
    in heat and cold
    with no shade or blanket
    should this be told ?
If he spilled his water by accident
    they did not care
    where the liquid went
"Bad dog" was all they said to him
    his chance for life
    was set to "slim"
    They drove away
    in a big old truck
    they left him there
    completely stuck
    His thirsty tongue
    licked morning dew
    he bought some time
    well..wouldn't you ?
    The heat increased
    as the day went on
    mosquitoes bit
    from dusk till dawn
    He whined and cried
    for his old mama dog
he laid next to the rotted log
    His lungs then rattled
    and his heartbeat stopped
then his soul began to fly
he fell into an angels arms
    hovering in the sky
She pointed to his Hell below
    and whispered into his ear
    "Spirit Dog we welcome you
no more from Earth to fear"
    They headed off to Sirius
and he became a canine Clown
he forgot about the pain gone by
and his bleached bones on the ground

very sad, even more so because stuff like that actually happens :( i felt some of the rhyming was a bit forced, but otherwise its brilliantly emotive :)

Thank you. I wrote it one rainy day when I looked out the window to an empty doghouse. I have never understood why many humans cannot see the direct relationship to misery in our own lives by the way we treat other living things.
