of course it could mean retirement/resignation from several sorts of occupation, such as the advertising industry,
or quite a number of non-military posts in government or corporate industry as well.

could even mean graduation from high school or college, depending on the nature of what was majored in.

It's hard to explain. I got out of army in 2005. I've been bartending most the time since.
