    Cheers all.

I've always been meaning to record a song or two, yet I, ofcourse, have no studio or anything.

What would you suggest for recording music right onto the computer? What kind of mic should I use, which programs, etc... (Since I do not think that i'm doing much of a good job when using the small white computer mic and the windows recording utility.)

Get yourself a good soundcard - it's very likely that you already have one but if you don't make sure you get one. If you can get one with a regular jack - you know the sort that you have on amps. The pros will all use soundcards with jacks, if it doesn't have one get yourself an adapter.

Just get a decent Mic, nothing too fancy just a good solid piece.

As for software, get ProTools or Acid. I prefer Protools but it's up to you.

    Cheers Sebbi.

I'm running a laptop, so a soundcard with a jack would be problematic... what is that adaptor you speak of?

    I'll check out the software...

    thanks alot :)

Look at N-Track Studio - multi channel recording - free!! Support for VST/DX plugins. (http://www.fasoft.com/)

If you are in the UK buy a copy of Computer Music - an entire DVD of music software including an entire recording environment (Computer Muzys).

Shure SM57 is a perfectly good mic for home recording, and can be got pretty cheap these days.

Put all the money you save on a decent soundcard!! ;)

Oh btw, the condensors aren't that good for vocal mics, such as the SM-57... but the SM-58s are damn good... they aren't too bad if you can pick one up used, but they run at $99 on musicians friend. The SM-57 is a nice amp mic... it's $89. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/d=tp?q=shure

If you can pick one up used, it's a good deal... well, for the money, they're good new, as well. :p

I still say you can't get any better than Cool Edit Pro, M-Audio, and Shure.
