I feel like after the first wave of punk in the 70's, we were left with about 4 or 5 prototypes based on different bands of that time. The obnoxious asshole bands stemming from the sex pistols like the Casualties, the political bands stemming from the clash like anti-flag, the "pop-punk" stemming from the ramones and buzzcocks like greenday and blink182, plus bands like television and the talking heads got co-opted into the "new wave", possibly the biggest bullshit musical term ever coined (and I fucking love the talking heads), and led to a lot of today's weirder "indie" music.

Of course if you're talking about earlier influences, then you should look at Lou Reed and the Velvet Undergrood, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, and the MC5....even earlier than that, the Rolling Stones and The Who.
