    Interesting.

At the end of Jan. or beginning of Feb. we had a birthday party for my 3 year old granddaughter and everyone but one person got sick, some worse than others. It took my wife a month to recover and my granddaughter's mother was in the ER twice because she couldn't breath. They told her it was the flu and sent her home. Took her about 6 weeks to get over it.

Yea. This was a cough that made my mom's throat raw. They gave her the cough syrup with codeine or hydrocodone or one of those. It was really not good, and if memory serves it took a long while to get over. The only difference is that I didn't catch it, or didn't notice that I caught it. I didn't have a cough at any time, but I maybe I caught it and didn't notice like they talk about on the news. My dad didn't catch it though/didn't notice and that's funny because they share a room.

The death toll so far seems to be at level similar to seasonal flu. It's still a significant amount of mortality, but COVID deaths have received far more attention than annual flu deaths. Certainly, if no countermeasures had been taken, the mortality rate would have been much higher. All-cause mortality will probably not be dramatically higher than average over the next several years as a direct result of COVID.

The flu doesn't shut down the whole planet all at once. Thus the attention.

So why make the statement that covid deaths have received far more attention than flu deaths. As if you're surprised?

13 new cases announced today for this county. That brings the total to 41 so far.

Gov. Abbott announces phased reopening of Texas businesses

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — Gov. Greg Abbott announced executive orders Friday that will reopen businesses and state parks, ease surgery restrictions and aim to reduce further spread of COVID-19 in Texas.

Abbott says all stores in Texas should be able to operate “retail to go” starting April 24. Businesses will be able to sell products without customers entering the stores. Services “may be provided through pickup, delivery by mail, or delivery to the customer’s doorstep.”

Abbott made the announcement at noon from the Texas Capitol

You need population density over 2000 people per sq km within a population that has more than 12% over the age 65 in an area at the time where the minimum daily temp gets under 18 degrees Celsius

Outside those 3 parameters, lockdowns are totally useless

    You are in California right?

So you think if teens all across California were sneaking out to hang out with their friends...national and local newspapers would tell you right? ...their reporters would know how exactly?

All those teens in the poorer parts of California, all those spring breakers... they are all just back at their parents behaving themselves are they....and if they weren't, the news would tell you?

My best guess, and it's only a guess, is that yes the news would tell me. I'm not sure I follow though.

I think you were replying to the part about 'without technology we'd really be lost' but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I agree that it is challenging, but I don't think we should end it. And I definitely think people should do their very best to behave.

Technology is the problem the cell phone is the problem..
y'all didn't have the cell phone in your hand you wouldn't even know there was a virus would have read about it in the paper probably weeks later and I'd have been over already..
Cellular technology makes everything worth with the instant news dumbing down minds instantaneous..

Good let Texas be the guinea pigs.

btw The state of Texas has done the least amount of testing considering it's size.

    Should be interesting

Well there isn't a region in the world so far that doesn't fit that description

Brazil is the only country in the tropics that's past a thousand deaths, and most of theirs in Sao paulo, it's wealthiest state

California had way more initial contact points than new York, if what I said wasn't roughly true, LA should be worse off than NY at this time

I'm wondering just how quickly attitudes would turn if they said to boomers, ok, we will keep in lockdown, but we are going to sieze the assets and raid the superannuation funds of over 65s to pay for it, all those retirees down in Florida, people like Nancy Pelosi, come on Nancy, we will stay in lockdown, but hand over that $140 million

If combined with maintaining the social distancing safety measures this part doesn't sound unreasonable imo:
