"Suitcase" nukes in the hands of terrorists?

Last year I read in Debka, a subscription only online journal that specializes in international affairs, that according to Mossad, the Israeli equivalent to MI6 and CIA that the Russian government can account for only 48 of the 52 “suitcase” nuclear weapons the Soviets had manufactured during the cold war.

The natural assumption is that at least one or two of these would be available on the open market, and surely there would be plenty of eager bidders who could afford the price - $20 million at least I would think.

It is hard to find information on these weapons other than they have a payload of 4-7 kilotons, which of course could devastate the central core of any major modern city. One of these things going off say in downtown San Francisco would essentially close down that important port for years, not to mention instantly killing tens of thousands. The economic disruption would be incalculable.

My question is whether anyone else has information on these weapons, their dimensions, how easy it would be to transport, and of course to detonate them. How easy would they be to detect, say coming across either border, or in a container?

Normal luggage - nothing really unusual except for their contents...

Well the two bombs dropped on Japan in 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were in the 20 kiloton range. They destroyed the cities but remember we are talking paper-thin buildings then, literally in Japan.

No a 4 k bomb would take out the central core of a modern American city, not much more ...

They will bring it in by container or truck but I sense one already is here and we are just being lulled by the authorities. Bismarck once said, "I never believe anything until it has been officially denied!"


They will choose a port, Seattle or LA would make the most sense as imports of fuel oil. I think on the West coast though.

Aaah just musings but we all know there is going to be a frightful thing in the next several months.

Right Shaggie but I think the terrorists want to kill as many people as possible as well. For example Houston is the main importer of crude and has the most refineries, but that city is incredibly spread out and while they could take out the refineries they wouldn't kill that many. San Francisco on the other hand would be ideal because it imports literally millions of containers from Asia and Australia each year, as well as fuel oil.

Its beside the point but which ever city they choose to destroy it will have huge repercussions on the US and international markets - Dow at 2000 and Nasdaq at 200.
In one fell swoop they will destroy the US economy and international trade for years to come. Its simply not a case of "if" but "when".

Well here's the real joke ... you can get citizenship in the US using a COUNTY based document of birth. There is simply no consistency among those birth certificates. They are simple pieces of paper and no one has any way of knowing whether they are real. COUNTY docs friend!

You can get a drivers licence in Washington State without any proof of citizenship. I know, I am not a citizen and I drive a car legally.

The whole security of America is a bloody stupid joke, and an expensive one too.

I have some inside info on how lame it really is, but it really is lame.
