51k deaths from COVID in the US so far this year. 480k deaths annually from smoking. Even if there's a benefit, I'm not so sure it's worth the trade-offs.

There's also an issue of confounding factors. Most people who are getting serious cases of COVID are old, and have an underlying health problem. Data on COVID rates could be skewed by the fact that smokers are more likely to die young.

Smokers might also have a more lax attitude toward health issues, and therefor be less likely to get tested for COVID.

It sounds like the issue is worth investigating, but there's no take-home message.

Same shit, they are 300 pounds most of their lives, have a stroke, because they smoked it's counted as a smoking related death

I don't smoke, I hate cigarettes, but I don't swallow bullshit either. You will never hear the term cheeseburger or Coca Cola related deaths

As of May 11th Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear will require us to begin wearing face masks in public. I hope this does not extend to the workplace.

    Anyway

An example of transmission probabilities used in modelling for Influenza out breaks

This one per contact probabilities. Covid won't exactly be the same but the virus is about the same size as Influenza

A top New York City doctor who was on the front line of the US fight against coronavirus has taken her own life.

Dr Lorna Breen, who was medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in Manhattan, died of self-inflicted injuries on Sunday, police said.

The 49-year-old's father, Dr Philip Breen, told the New York Times: "She tried to do her job and it killed her."

    USA:

"Banks handling the government's $349 billion loan program for small businesses made more than $10 billion in fees — even as tens of thousands of small businesses were shut out of the program, according to an analysis of financial records by NPR.

The banks took in the fees while processing loans that required less vetting than regular bank loans and had little risk for the banks, the records show. Taxpayers provided the money for the loans, which were guaranteed by the Small Business Administration.

According to a Department of Treasury fact sheet, all federally insured banks and credit unions could process the loans, which ranged in amount from tens of thousands to $10 million. The banks acted essentially as middlemen, sending clients' loan applications to the SBA, which approved them.

For every transaction made, banks took in 1% to 5% in fees, depending on the amount of the loan, according to government figures. Loans worth less than $350,000 brought in 5% in fees while loans worth anywhere from $2 million to $10 million brought in 1% in fees."

Small Business Rescue Earned Banks $10 Billion In Fees

Up to 5% fees on loans the banks don't even guarantee. Oi Vey

"A protester has been shot dead during unrest in the Lebanese city of Tripoli, security and medical sources have revealed, with an economic crisis bringing demonstrations back onto the streets.

Soldiers fired into the air and used tear gas and rubber bullets during the unrest in Tripoli, a security source said on Tuesday.

The man who died was in his 20s, the source said.

In a statement overnight, the army said soldiers were attacked during rioting in Tripoli. A firebomb was thrown at one of its vehicles and a hand grenade was hurled at a patrol, slightly wounding two soldiers, it said

Harvard study on the link between air polution and covid deaths

"Results: We found that an increase of only 1 μg/m3 in PM2.5 is associated with an 8% increase in the COVID-19 death rate (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2%, 15%). The results were statistically significant and robust to secondary and sensitivity analyses. Conclusions: A small increase in long-term exposure to PM2.5 leads to a large increase in the COVID-19 death rate. "

Exposure to air pollution and COVID-19 mortality in the United States: A nationwide cross-sectional study

PM2. 5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers

I just read South Carolina extended stay at home orders another 15 days. They were originally aiming for May 1 but I guess thought better of it.
But the stay at home orders are a bit of a joke here anyways because of how many exceptions there are to it

We haven't been declining in our number of daily cases here, what about you guys?
