Both bands are great, Dead has been around quite a bit longer, and Jerry was the man. But Phish's music with trey on lead and mike on bass will blow your mind every single time they step on stage. Plus they throw a much better live show in my opinion.

    Phish

I don't think you can compare. You can, but they are so different in so many different ways that they are just both incredible.

I think they're comparable because they're the two greatest jam bands of all time.

Yes his bass skills are very good, but you can you not say the same about Phil's?
To choose who's better........I would have to think about it.

I wold go with the Dead only because I am not a big phish fan, I gave em a try and they just didn't do anything for me, maybe it was their STUDIO produced crap quality on the cd i bought or something but I just didnt dig em.

There is nothing anyone can say in this thread that hasnt already been said to either compare or not about these two bands.

But everything always lead back to the Grateful Dead...

    Forever Jerry

technically speaking: trey is better than jerry and phil is better than mike...

but as far as music which makes my soul move and groove.....i like jerry and mike better :D

overall: the music of the grateful dead speaks to me more, but the music of phish is just so damn fun!

    soooo.....

    it's a tie!! :D

and yeah, just like the dead, phish's live music is WAY better than studio....

Jerry had heart and soul that none of the TOO and Dead guitarists can capture, and I LOVE Mark and Steve and I respect Warren and Jimmy.
Steve Kimock comes close, but he will disappear inside his head and get technical at the weirdest times.
With drums, Mickey is the man. No one will compare with his technique or knowlege of the instrument. The Smithsonian chose well with him...
I give credit to Phish. THey were amazing technicians. But it was mental masturbation and the GD was a long slow night of the best you ever had.

theyre not really comparable music wise, but they are in some ways talent wise. Jerry and Trey are on the same pedistal musically, as are the rest of the bands' members. Theyre too different to compare in my opinion

Saw 'em, heard 'em, but Phish never did it for me. Yeah, they're talented, their vocal harmonies were way tighter than the Dead's, but I just couldn't get into them. I gotta go with the Dead...

Please enough with this, this question has been kicked aroun for some 10 years, and why? I have no fucking clue, listen to both their musics and you will realize they are too different too compare. Hahahah with that being said i like phish better. but tahts just cuz im a 16 yr old punk who grew up with Phish and not the dead, so in conclusion, who really knows.

My opinion is my opinion. I was sharing it with you, not trying to sway you. I have nothing but respect for phish and their fans.

I like the Dead more. Although Phish is really good, I think that the Dead's members were just more talented, and wrote better songs as well. Phish is better than your average jam band, but the Grateful Dead is legendary :)

I love the Grateful Dead and I love Phish...I would say they are both awesome. I tend to go with the Dead a little more as far as music goes. But Phish still kicks ass!

Phish. Never been to a dead show, on account of being 20 thus too young to have been around for it. all i can say is that my first phish show-camden, NJ, July 31 2003-completely, utterly, in every sense of the word, blew my mind-and i was totally sober. I'l never forget that night long as i live! AHHHHH DIVIDED SKY, THE WIND BLOWS HIGH!

and at coventry, when trey and page broke down during wading in a velvet sea, embracing each other as the entire crowd sang the song for them.

I regret I never saw Phish. But they never appealed to me, musically, like the grateful dead did. I go watch dead cover bands religiously. I dont see me regretting missing a Phish cover Band. once again , just observations on my own feelings. The Grateful Dead are not better then Phish, but niether are Phish better than GD. but without the Grateful Dead, there would be no Phish.

im sorry , but the obvious choice is the dead, they were the absolute, a movement, i dont want to compare them to phish because i too love phish, seen em, heard em, but i just cant even begin to explain the feelings that the dead give me personally, theyre music just speaks volumes to me. i dont even know how i would classify the dead if i had to, but i dont think of them as a jam band so much as just great musicians, and theyre live shows are awesome, now that its just the dead i will say theyre not the same, but hey, anyone playing to the dead i can respect
    DEADHEADS FOR LIFE>....RIP JERRY
