Who is bitching? I suppose everytime you see some guy with a mohawk knock down a trash can you do it so you can be cool? I say that heavy metal probably saved the asses of some real cocky jerks I knew at that time. I got my venting and release through the music.
My vote for the 1st metal song, Helter Skelter by the Beatles.
In 1977, my tastes shifted from John Denver to Deep Purple, AC/DC, Judas Priest, and the Scorpions.
When Iron Maiden first came out, I didn't like them, they were the 'new metal' to me, and sounded like a rip off of the bands I liked. They were okay though.
The song 'Heavy Metal' by Sammy Hagar is a good tribute to the genre.
The album 'Unleashed in the East' by Judas Priest, is my vote for the quintessential metal album. They were a wicked live act.
I guess I am one of those half whatevers, but I am glad to have seen and heard those rippin' bands in their prime.
PS, I like the Clash, but that is about it for punk for me.

 

Some punk told me the other day the Clash were punks but didn't actually play punk. She reckons they played Ska

The Clash had Punk, Rap, Reagee, Disco etc etc. They were one of the first punk bands to unsimplefy things if i'm not mistaken, and yeah i know some punks who say the clash punk sucks cock, and others like um...punks crazy people good friends not to be confused with punk rawkers

 

Ah Tencent your original post about metal cracked me up. Ah to think I used listen to that metal crap like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide. I started to move away from that crap and then discovered The Dead and other jam bands and haven't looked back. How many riots have there been at Dead or Phish shows? None. How many riots at metal shows? Lots of 'em.


Heavy Metal is the sonic equivalent of someone dragging a cheese grater over my eardrums.

 

ATS98booboo, you may have a point. I did notice a slight different ambience between the crowd on the floor at the Simon and Garfunkel concert, and the ones we were being crushed to death by when we were right up front and center at the railing for Ozzy Osbourne. I think the guy punching my buddy in the head over and over trying to get us to move was the clue that tipped me off.

The first show I saw, Ted Nugent was playing 'Great White Buffalo', and when the verse about the 'white dogs, with their thick and empty heads, couldn't see past the billfold, wanted all the buffalo dead.', was playing.....I looked around the arena, and there must have been a dozen fights breaking out....lol
The last shows I have seen, yanni, buena vista social club, the eagles, wide mouth mason, liona boyd.....

there wasn't one fight at any of them, I am pretty sure.

 

They fucking suck.... one of the worst bands of all time, imo.
