Why do we say things the way we do?

    my first thought was "who's we?"

    language conventions evolve socially, and that's the beginning and end to it.
    in greater depth there's a whole science of the process of how language conventions evolve and the history of their doing so.

    i see most people have responded with examples rather then addressing the question as stated.

    and that we really depends on where we were each born, grew up and are currently living.
