King of the Hill

I happened upon this television show, and I'm happy to say that I will vow NEVER to watch it again...bear with me, I'm really upset.

While doing my homework the show caught my attention as Hank and Bobby HIll went to a national/state park (not sure which) to go fishing and happened upon "the gathering". It began to anger me as I got increasingly offended by the portrayal of "hippies". They portrayed us as litterbugs who trashed the trails with garbage, polluters who "are the worst polluters of water and air right behind DOW Chemical and Mexican semi-trucks", lazy (Hank thinking "like a hippie": " We want everything handed to us and act like we're kids again), Ignorant ("Oh, so the sun is God??"), Thieves (They stole Hank's fishing poles), Selfish (when the hippies ran out of food they chastised Bobby for not having anything to give them since he ate some of their stew), Non-self reliant (the "hippies" left because park services got cancelled and their port-a-potties were taken away), Drug addicts (Bobby said to Hank that all the hippies smoked all their clothes that's why they had to run around naked)...dirty...etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. I could list more, but my fingers are sore.

Things like this really emphasize the stereotype that our culture lives with on a daily basis. Kids watch this show and see how "hippies" are portrayed and they believe it. I was hoping the show would turn at the end and show how "hippies" really are. Unfortunately it didn't.

I'm boycotting the show and probably will write to the folks that produced it. I think it's a bit unfair.

Am I going overboard? Anyone ever seen this episode? IS anyone else offended by this portrayal?

I started boycotting the show a few days after it came on the air because Mike Judge stopped making beavis and butthead to work on this steamy pile of not funny.

 

No, I am not offended that they mocked a bunch of wannabes. Actually, I wish I had caught that particular episode. I could use a good laugh.

Maybe it will be on again.

Maybe you should just learn to take a joke and not get so bent out of shape about such mundane crap. These stereotypes (many of which are true) about "hippies" have been around for a long time. It's nothing new.

 

I disagree, but I'm not going to argue with your views. Everyone has their opinion, I just think it's sad to reenforce stereotypes.

If I were a hippie, I wouldn't care if my culture was poked at a little bit, it was farcical, and not meant to be a serious sociological dialogue on any culture.

I'm from Texas, and I'm not offended by the redneck portrayl of this state in the show...

its a cartoon.

i like king of the hill. they use a LOT of sarcasum and well, it goes below the surface.

It's a good show, but that episode does give the wrong image of hippies. For a hippy, it would be funny, but when seen by some ignorant bastard, it'd make him even more ignorant.

hahaha! That is my favorite episode! I think its funny as hell and I'm not the least bit offended by it. I've gone to plenty of gatherings... I don't know...I just thought its like poking fun at us in a funny way just like they do to hicks, jocks, goths, punk...everyone on some show or another. And really, the ones that matter (in the future generation) this dumb little show won't make any difference to. Its a dumb little cartoon with no real credit or influence on our world.

 

Thas gotta be one of my favorite episodes. Stop being so offended and be a hippy.

lame show with lamer jokes. I haven't watched it in ages. But stereotypes only hurt, they sure as hell don't help. I don't know if I'd be pissed off enough to write a letter to the editors though, since 95% of jokes are based on stereotypes. I do understand where you're coming from though - I get really pissed off about jokes with stereotypical men vs stereotypical women (ie a women's perfect day includes getting expensive jewelry, a man's is just beer and bj's)

 

If people don't like it, a simple solution would be to not even watch TV. It's mostly all garbage anyway.

the only decent character on there can hardly speak...... and that is boomhauer.

did you see what happened with the dave matthews band a year ago?? they dumped their raw sewage in the chicago river on a boat full of tourists.......

the dark star orchestra did something like that too, dumped their sewage from their tour bus onto someones lawn...
